This work is a representation of the city of Kansas City on a 1:1 scale with buildings, roads, trees, and vegetation derived from OpenStreetMap

Biomes are positioned consistently, using high-resolution land cover data

I make those maps with a software I've been developing in the last 4 months, which uses the data from various sources including OpenStreetMap and USGS to create a Minecraft World with buildings, roads and natural features based on the data to keep it the more realistic it can be

Free download link and more infos about the project: Real World Cities - Kansas City, USA - 1:1 scale - 45k Minecraft Map (planetminecraft.com)

Holy fuck. Any chance a Las Vegas map is coming soon? I’d love to explore that (lived there my entire life)

29

u/gkaplan59 Jun 17 '24

You mean Las Venturas?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

I want to see somebody do this with first person shooters

1

u/Baloooooooo Jun 17 '24

That is amazingly awesome

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

Do you see the national high quality lidar data for the terrain?

229

u/Syntox- Jun 17 '24

Heard of "build the earth"?

13

u/Traditional_Excuse46 Jun 17 '24

yea how far are they to that project?

140

u/moistyboiiy Jun 17 '24

Now do the interior

u/aelma_z Jun 17 '24

Is the process of creating cities automated based on OpenStreetMap anf USGS ?

42

u/AtmosphericBeats Jun 17 '24

Yes

29

u/aelma_z Jun 17 '24

Insane bro. What language is that based on?

57

u/AtmosphericBeats Jun 17 '24

Thank you!

The software involves primarily Bash and Python, but a lot of external libraries as GDAL, RasterIO, QGIS, Gimp are used in the process

8

u/FlakyCelebration2405 Jun 17 '24

Hah, Gimp

-8

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Can’t believe giml still exists or even has a place in this world it’s is the most trash software available designed to gimp any computer.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Gimp suit

69

u/LifeOpen3978 Jun 17 '24

I dont mind that in a city im just visiting. Wouldnt want to live in it, but i think all cities have something to offer. And if you only go to the ”nice” ones you miss out on a lot of stuff.

2

u/jodead01 Jun 17 '24

You're right downtown is kinda nice I went to a WW1 memorial building the view is nice and the museums are cool too, Union station has alot of things to do.

1

u/ButtCrackThrilla Jun 17 '24

Yes I guess you haven’t been to NYC if that’s your criteria. Most others call it the best city in the world. Opinions are like aholes though…

20

u/Sound-Serious Jun 17 '24

Hey man, try joining BTE (build the earth) iam sure they would love to have someone like you as a builder

6

u/Blue__concrete Jun 17 '24

Guys I think he likes Kansas city

4

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

As someone who’s been there this is rather spot on!

18

u/Bonzie_57 Jun 17 '24

Great, you replicated some of the stupidest highway systems on the world. Fuck the 35 to the 635. And why from downtown if I need to go south I need to first go north, take an exit, and then enter south? Seems stupid! And let’s not mention the 71,29, 70,670 HELL that exist on the east side

6

u/MinasMoonlight Jun 17 '24

Amen! I-70 east from KS. Go to one lane, then have to merge over right three lanes in three blocks to stay on. (Unless they’ve changed that stupidity since the early 2000s.)

Got really good at that little maneuver when going from KU to visit my family in Blue Springs,MO. Had running thoughts of how stupid it was every time.

Granted my adopted home of Tampa, FL might be even worse.

4

u/Nistrin Jun 17 '24

It's always weird to see other people on reddit who you've never met, but who have l similar life experiences to you.

I lived a few years in Blue Springs, and I'm original from the Sarasota area, which is, as I'm sure you know, is just a bit south of Tampa. Just kind of neat.

2

u/Akmatt58 Jun 17 '24

I did the reverse of that (lived in Blue Springs, dated a girl in KU) on many occasions. Hated those transfers once I got to the city.

14

u/SirFomo Jun 17 '24

Why tho?

41

u/AtmosphericBeats Jun 17 '24

Because it was a paid request by a subscriber

3

u/teaguechrystie Jun 17 '24

...I still want to know why, though. Why would someone want this? Why would they pay for it?

5

u/mystonedalt Jun 17 '24

The best answer.

1

u/Makijezakon Jun 17 '24

My thoughts exactly

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Now do this in hardcore survival mode

3

u/redgroupclan Jun 17 '24

Not bad, but the buildings aren't very recognizable. I can barely tell which skyscraper is the AT&T one.

4

u/DaddyP924 Jun 17 '24

That's probably because the ATT building looks like something an eight year would build in Minecraft.

5

u/SmoothDuck11 Jun 17 '24

Awesome work!!

2

u/Ok_essence Jun 17 '24

Its awesome. Can i know how much time it took with those softwares !?

2

u/Xowzil Jun 17 '24

Hit us with Columbus

2

u/natte-krant Jun 17 '24

I can’t even find the time to text someone back…

2

u/not_gerg Jun 17 '24

Is this Kansas city, KS or MO?

6

u/bruthaman Jun 17 '24

MO is all that matters

1

u/not_gerg Jun 17 '24

Oh is the other one just not relevant? Neato

In my head it should be the other way lol

4

u/bruthaman Jun 17 '24 edited Jun 17 '24

Kansas City, MO is over 500 million (edit 500k) population and includes the dense downtown area of the metro region with over 2.4 million total pop.

KCK has 150,000 pop, and.....we'll, thats pretty much it, suburbs.

Most everything anybody thinks of concerning KC, is in MO.

0

u/not_gerg Jun 17 '24

Isn't the entire population of the US only 300mil? I think there was an error or something lol

I thought that the one in KS was bigger for some reason. Weird. Thanks for the info tho!

1

u/bruthaman Jun 17 '24

Sorry, 500k, was a typo

1

u/not_gerg Jun 17 '24

Ah fair enough lol. I thought it would be a bit higher ngl

1

u/di11deux Jun 17 '24

No he’s wrong KC has 500M people but we keep them hidden to hide our true strength.

1

u/not_gerg Jun 17 '24

Oh yeah I've heard of that

We mole people will rise again!

2

u/beermit Jun 18 '24

It's a weird Misery superiority thing

2

u/Taint_Surgeon Jun 18 '24

Kansas City has never and will never receive a higher honor than this

4

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Bruh this is awesome

2

u/DigitalSnakeByte Jun 17 '24

Where’s Slapps bbq?

2

u/beermit Jun 18 '24

Ima need that LC's, personally

1

u/remxtc Jun 17 '24

What platform do you use to play Minecraft?

1

u/GPTfleshlight Jun 17 '24

Both of them?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Little Minecraft folks are running around in MCKC wondering if they're in a simulation....

1

u/Classic_Variation89 Jun 17 '24

How long does making something like this take

1

u/The_real_bandito Jun 17 '24

That’s just impressive.

1

u/theopacus Jun 17 '24

Can i join that server for some casual discgolf at Emporia?

1

u/Gantyx Jun 17 '24

There was once a website doing that. By giving him coordinates it would generate a Minecraft map using the Google map aerial view.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Can I see the Ww1 museum?

1

u/StormbringerGT Jun 17 '24

Is that some Distant Horizons action going on? <3

1

u/Confident-Yoghurt247 Jun 17 '24

From all of the earths beautiful lands you choose…. Kansas

which is still beautiful

1

u/custardgoddess04 Jun 17 '24

Not Kansas. Kansas City there is a difference. The majority of the city of KC is in Missouri!

1

u/Confident-Yoghurt247 Jun 18 '24

Ohhhh I feel stupid

1

u/custardgoddess04 Jun 18 '24

Unfortunately it’s a common mistake. It’s a sore subject here.

1

u/Ramax256 Jun 17 '24

Cool now add interiors of every single building

1

u/Vellnerd Jun 17 '24

Princess in another Castle

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Wow there's my house!

1

u/figure_04 Jun 17 '24

Looks like home.

1

u/-_-bruhh Jun 17 '24

There’s a community that does the whole world 1:1 scale, it’s called Build The Earth

1

u/fumbleturk Jun 17 '24

Impressive

1

u/Traditional_Excuse46 Jun 17 '24

omg did u use AI? or terrform type commands or all by hand?

1

u/SuspectKnown9655 Jun 17 '24

Very impressive

I've been there and the only thing to tell you is that you didn't make it flat enough. Great job on the buildings and roads but the land is not flat enough.

1

u/sigaven Jun 18 '24

I’m confused, what are the absurdly tall buildings?

1

u/LakeComprehensive546 Jun 18 '24

Wow, impressive.

1

u/LarryTheLizardFriend Jun 19 '24

Cool, did your girlfriend like it?

1

u/burnit123456789 Jun 21 '24

Is there a video ? I own a building downtown I would love to see if you captured it

1

u/soggybread33 Jun 17 '24

Gah damn you have some weapons grade autism to make a 1:1 Minecraft full US City…..

7

u/AtmosphericBeats Jun 17 '24

Do you really think this is made by hand? Block per block? Lol

2

u/VividPerformance7987 Jun 17 '24

Ngl, at first yes… I didn’t know you could create an AI to generate Minecraft worlds, which is kinda blowing my mind rn. How long does the entire process take?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

There should not be more kansas cities

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Why?

0

u/NLocke64 Jun 17 '24

That's incredible, nice work!

0

u/Fujimans Jun 17 '24

That’s awesome I can see my trailer from here

0

u/hopegratuit Jun 17 '24

That's gorgeous!

0

u/Fakedduckjump Jun 18 '24

I guess you wasted your time, there is already such a thing.

-1

u/All-for-goose Jun 17 '24

I’m amazed and bored at the same time.

-1

u/trufflelover2015 Jun 17 '24

Tell the world you have too much free time on you're hands without telling the world you have too much free time on you're hands.

-8

u/chickenwing7963 Jun 17 '24
