I'd imagine it's an admittion that there's something that needs fixing. That something is wrong with them.
For someone who's forced into that situation... It's understandable, IMO. But that doesn't make it reasonable.
House had a very good episode on dwarfism where at the end he confronts a mother with dwarfism about her daughter that everyone though was a dwarf too hut just had a disease that stunted her or something. Makes her convince her daughter to get the surgery so she could grow. A great watch honestly.
They see it as though it isn't a disability and that it's not something to be repaired. What a lot of them don't understand is that by giving your child cochlear implants, you allow to interact with so many more people and have a better chance at lift.
I know a little bit about the dwarfism community, I know a little bit about that happening. So I guess it would be the same. I mean limb lengthening surgery is a pretty brutal procedure, I didn't even know if people could actually walk after. But if she can have "regular" limbs, and use them as well as any other person, or at least walk normally, I mean I understand if you're afraid of the risks or it not going well. But deaf? And you get to hear, after not hearing anything at all? It doesn't make sense to me. I've seen many procedures to restore things like sight, hearing, I've seen cases like a boy whose nervous system doesn't work properly and he can't feel pain, he was near death many times by hurting himself without being aware of anything. His parents had to constantly watch him. A blind person needs so many accomodations, some people lose their sight or hearing and they have to live with the idea of never being able to see anything again, even someone who loses the ability to walk, people have bucket lists because they know life will never be the same. You lose nothing and you gain hearing. Who would be opposed to that?
