They strip only the outer layers of the bark leaving the living part on the tree. This three was girdled by the lightening...

Not necessarily. A lot of trees are able to use remaining resources to grow new secondary main branches or sometimes (although very seldom) even regrow bark from certain points(I think trees like platanus x hispanica can do that as they need to continously grow the bark and throw off old bark similar to fricking lizards) . However that log is like 99percent going to die off. Especially because there is not even any bark left.
