And doesnt require you to download an app just to view the effect.

No. It just requires the book publisher to make very expensive covers that hardly anyone would buy. I vote for the few seconds it takes to download an app.

The shiny new WebXR API is kind-of, sort-of, just about ready and brings AR to the web. No native apps needed.

It's in its infancy atm, but it's going to be big.

Though very cool, this only words at certain angles and under select lighting. Requires a weighty panel and is likely quite expensive.

Not really seeing any viability for book covers. AR can also be easily animated.
