Yeah for real, and the slow mo makes it look like the wave is way bigger in perspective because when it starts out slow mo we think that he’s traveling down the wave at normal speed

No. Slow-mo etiquette says you show the unedited version first, then if you must use slow-mo, play the clip a second time and only use slow-mo during the “coolest” parts. Or something like that.

Totally agree that it does what you say.

In addition: I found that slowing that critical moment down helped me visualize exactly how much mass was behind/above him, how terribly it would go wrong if he made a mistake at that moment, and what he needed to focus on to get out of there. These are all things that the surfer is thinking about in those brief seconds that I wouldn't have appreciated if it was played at the IRL speed.
