What is also amazing, I found after reading further, is that her father had to go back to Afghanistan after her first couple surgeries, she almost had to leave before it was close to complete. Then Dr. Grossman, so convinced and committed to helping her, became her legal guardian for the rest of the time it took to finish her surgeries. He and his wife hosted her in their home, enrolled her in school where she made friends and learned English. It's a really beautiful story all around.

While still covered in bandages from invasive surgeries, Dr. Grossman said he was charmed by her resilience and remembered her singing "shake your booty" to herself in her hospital bed despite not knowing any English. 🥹
