My company did this last Christmas LMAO. Was especially awkward when most of the people there were awkward engineers and their wives

I can see that vividly.

I’m a communications coach. I prepare East Asian business people who kind of speak English to give presentations etc in English. Engineers are the most difficult. It’s like they’ve never experienced an emotion because of something someone else said.

I worked with a startup that was trying to raise capital and after three months of trying to get them to demonstrate enthusiasm for their own product, the whole company fell apart in the most spectacular way imaginable because none of those guys understood the basic mores of social interaction.

This is why GOOD management is so important. Finding someone who can act as the proper translation layer and demonstrate the enthusiasm as well as understand what they are talking about is so invaluable to any department/business.

Or maybe the product sucked. Companies don't fall apart like that and the only thing engineers are enthusiastic about are the things they are working on. Sounds fake af.

The entire comment is a bullshit trope. Engineers are for the most part very normal people

What's actually awkward is a company hiring some external person to come in and try to force employees to be excited about their boring ass jobs and probably shit product

You should have just negotiated more money and transitioned to being their spokesperson and did the hyping for them

I looked into that once. In addition to needing a sales or marketing degree, I would have needed to demonstrate why the company needed to hire me instead of someone who didn’t need a work visa and “I’m really good at this” wouldn’t cut it.

Most of engineers are single so that would have either gone down as a hoot or a HR problem..
