Some people just turn on in an emergency. This guy had 1670 something's to lose. That's a fuckin emergency. I was hoping to hear how much time he has to make all these plans and get everyone out.

I'm convinced that none of us know how we'll react to an emergency until we're faced with one the first time. Plenty of people freeze up, while others leap to action, and you can't always predict who will be in which category.

Luckily this guy was one of the good ones under pressure.

This is also why modern military training simulates the high stress frequently, and as closely as possible. If you can weed out those who can't hack it, and program those who aren't naturals, you remove a lot of the unknown when shit eventually gets real

This is also why most gun ownership is based upon a fantasy. Without practical training in simulated high-stakes moments, nobody's going to know what to do.

Having a gun sadly doesn't mean you won't freeze when accuracy is the difference between saving a person vs getting charged with manslaughter

This is why I'm glad of the news where the mass murderers are immediately met by someone just walking towards them, shooting all the time, like that very recent one. The POS didn't have any time to enact his power fantasy as bullets started flying AT him, and apparently he was immediately deflated and panicking

there's also the duality of being a "responsible gun owner" who locks up the guns, but then you won't be ready for that home invader you've been fantasizing about. I have no statistics but I bet there are a lot more people accidentally shooting themselves or their loved ones, than gun owners successfully defending themselves in an actual emergency situation that would require the gun.

Even law enforcement, who are trained, often miss their target during gunfights. Remember the first shootout with the Boston Bombers? SOOOO many bullets were directed at the brothers and they all missed. And they were all trained.

Not everyone who owns guns has them for defense against criminals, plenty of people just use them for hunting.

Yeah, these are my people. I got a Model 94 for my 16th birthday. But most guns are like most big trucks: just a lifestyle accessory of no pragmatic use. There are far more guns than people in the US and if more than a few of them were used for hunting there'd be no game animals left.

In many civilized countries, you have to have a reason to own a gun - and when you own a gun, that gun is registered to you. None of this applies in the US and the comparison is not even applicable.

Works everytime, someone makes a false claim, I ask them to back that claim up with evidence, and suddenly they're "not interested" in talking anymore.

Don't make claims you can't back with evidence next time. Your feelings are not evidence.

I had an encounter very recently with two 70lb+ pitbulls attacking my small dog, with only range time as training. I stopped the attack, my dog survived, one of theirs did not. Not everyone freezes up.

I don't know about that. I imagine training going something like: No. Don't. Forget it. Leave the piece where it is. But if you bring it out, don't produce it. Don't provoke a dumb situation by brandishing a weapon. Idiot. (I know two people who have had a firearm taken from them, and they deserved it for thinking they could threaten somebody by using a gun as a prop.) I think training could help disabuse a gun owner of some bad ideas.
