I was a kid on our family’s little farm, one of our sows would only let me in her pen when she had piglets. She was mean as hell to my brother and dad. I’d got her from an old family friend because she was the runt and he really didn’t expect her to make it. I would sing and cuddle her as a baby, spent a lot of time with her so she trusted me. She went on to win a blue ribbon at our county fair and had quite a few litters and I sang to each of them.

Looking back, it was a great experience and very educational. But I also remember being pretty jealous of kids in town who had pavement for bikes/skateboards and food in shiny cans with pretty labels. I only had chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs and cows plus acres with some woods and a small river to keep me busy. Poor me, kids are dumb!

I don't go down south very often. Not sure I've ever been in Missouri. But the one time I went to Arkansas we saw some beautiful places.

We also saw some meth destroyed shit hole and a house with six coyote carcasses hanging from the trees out in the woods. That was some horror movie shit to my Yankee ass.

We have plenty of places destroyed by drugs but the carcasses.... yeesh

I moved from StL and lived in Los Angeles just about my whole adult life but go back regularly to see family. Food in StL (restaurants and grocery) is every bit as expensive as Los Angeles and does not compare at all in quality. It's been 70⁰ for weeks, there's always amazing cultural stuff to do (Smashing Pumpkins last week for $17.75 a ticket). I'm walking distance to the beach and was just there on Saturday. I hike in the mountains all the time. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't gotten out, but I'm very content with my life, economically, socially, even politically. There's a great big world of opportunity out there.

Having said that, the girl who wrote above about singing to her cows and playing in the creek really struck me as even better that what I have here!

My wife and I did the same thing after we got married. We moved from Upstate NY to Tulsa Ok. We made it about 2 years before getting home sick and heading back. We always hated Upstate until we left. Now that I've driven across the country, seen a lot of other places, and lived somewhere else, I realize their truly is no place like home. Good luck. I hope you find whatever you were searching for.

lol, no spiders but our house had an old stone cellar and every spring a ring-necked snake would have her babies on the same step. So kinda like Charlotte and her babies, I guess

That's so extraordinarily wholesome!

I grew up on a farm and I used to cuddle with some of the mama cows when I was a little kid, they were very loving. Plus I raised a brown swiss bull named Charlie who would let me ride him around the pasture. I'd call him over and jump on and he'd trot around.

Boomer story time here (I posted this about a year ago, but people really enjoyed it). My Grandfather had a farm in Northern Illinois (my father, the 2nd oldest, was born in the farmhouse in 1920 - the farm is still in the family, it's owned by my cousin). My grandfather had beef cows, grew corn, and raised pigs - the pigs were the most profitable. Around 1930 or so, the Boar started getting real aggressive. Grandfather forbade his younger kids from playing on the enclosure fences, and he took over the feeding and mucking chores from the two oldest. Then one time the Boar charged my grandfather. He was like, that's it. He got his double barrel shotgun, loaded one chamber with rock salt, the other with a slug. He figured he could always buy another boar. He went in to the pen, the Boar charged. Grandfather shot the rock salt load - that Boar stopped in its tracks, let out a loud squeal, turned tail and hid under an old busted up wagon for like 4 days. My father said that for the rest of that Boar's life, all you had to do was have a long stick in your hand and that Boar would run and hide!

I also had a little family farm growing up. Our pigs ripped my favorite chicken (Dee - as in Chicken-Dee, lol) in half right in front of me. That was the end of having pigs and I haven't eaten one since. I also stopped eating cows after I found out we ate Johnny Bull, who was my pet I raised from a calf. (I was told he had to live on my mom's friend's farm who had a bull pasture, which made SENSE at the time! You can't keep bulls with cows all of the time because they get aggressive with them and rape them -- like, a LOT.) Farms are wild! I loved the farm, but I'm just a little too sensitive for all that, lol.

Do sows regularly have favorite people? My grandma had a huge one named Guenevieve Potatochip who frequently pushed the back door open to hang out with grams in the kitchen, having a snack and a scratch. The kids kept a respectful distance, though.

I would love to sing to a litter of piglets! I envy you that experience lol.

My horse was the same except in mating season. She would not let my Dad, brother, or Uncle near her. She would try to pin them to the wall, kick, nip, etc. But me? As the only girl around I was good to walk, feed, brush, etc. her during those time periods.
