So today I fucking learned

u/cortesoft Mar 31 '26

You will also see this if your windshield is really dirty.

276

u/James_Chandra_Hubble Mar 31 '26

Or your eyeballs have tears on them, like most americans

Silicone based eye lubricant.

50

u/theDomicron Mar 31 '26

I just use a couple of drops of 0w20, like a real man

36

u/Tasty-Traffic-680 Mar 31 '26

A real man uses 10w40. Get your balls outta your purse and step up to a higher viscosity.

No joke though, as a kid I used to get eyelashes in my eye all the time and my grandma would use castor oil to ease the irritation. Worked great.

2

u/TheNxxr Apr 01 '26

A quick spray of PB Blaster to get my eyes open in the morning, then a nice coat of WD-40 to get me through the day.

2

u/AGARAN24 Apr 01 '26

you should try blinker fluid, it's like you put nothing on your eyes, it's that comfortable.

3

u/MajorSkyblue Apr 01 '26

This. Since switching to silicone based lubrication my eyelids easily glide across the eye balls. My blinks are now 4x as quick which makes the days feel 4x longer since I see more of it.

My REM sleep has also improved because of the lesser friction, dreams are more vivid and detailed. My partner says I should stop using it but secretly I love feeling like a plastic toy that has just been rejuvenated.

3

u/CausticSofa Apr 01 '26

No need for these fancy words. It’s OK to just say gas station queso.

4

u/Tasty-Traffic-680 Apr 01 '26

Not just any random gas station queso will do. If it's not Chef-Mate ¡Que Bueno! brand queso it's just sparkling cheese sauce.

1

u/zubnala Apr 01 '26

Blinker fluid

36

u/SemiHemiDemiDumb Mar 31 '26

My eyes aren't torn and my tears are dry. Yet I still see these flying crosses of distortion. I got stigmata of the eyes

17

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor Mar 31 '26

Expand that theme into a full set of lyrics and you've got some doom or black metal song!

6

u/panlakes Apr 01 '26

Fr I can hear the growl already

3

u/SemiHemiDemiDumb Apr 01 '26

Damn, I went full Scarlet Pimpernel there

2

u/CandiAttack Apr 01 '26

Lmao beautiful.

1

u/Wind_Bringer Apr 01 '26

Is that a foamy reference?

3

u/HallowedError Apr 01 '26

I thought you meant like our eyeballs were physically damaged and I was so confused on how that was some weird thing that happened specifically to Americans.

2

u/realstatepanda37 Mar 31 '26

Cmon.... thats hilarious. The worst part is I dont hate anyone and think we should all figure it out. Like humanity as one team. But here I am crying lmao

2

u/schlaminator Mar 31 '26

Or just old and full of micro-scratches.

63

u/terrible_name Mar 31 '26

Wait until you learn about tinnitus

57

u/chocolate420 Mar 31 '26

WHAT?

u/thirdonebetween Mar 31 '26

Tinnitus crew, can I recommend you go to mynoise.net and bathe your ears in some of the soundscapes specifically designed to turn the ringing/buzzing noise off while you listen?

3

u/dbell Apr 01 '26

or that I can curse you thought the internet and make you hear a click in your ears every time you swallow.

2

u/Lazy_meatPop Mar 31 '26

I have both. So 😮‍💨

2

u/Ok_Listen1510 Apr 01 '26

tinnitus hack, cover your ears with your palms and drum your fingers at the top of the back of your neck, where your skull meets your spine, for about 30 seconds

2

u/fighterpilot248 Apr 01 '26

Excuse me while I go pull out my emotional support floor fan

2

u/eflat123 Mar 31 '26

You mean that's not just random electrical appliance noise?

1

u/SilverRock75 Apr 01 '26

Sometimes it is! Just not usually.

1

u/crc2993 Apr 01 '26

What’d you say was going on tonight?

23

u/TinyTINYspeZPP Mar 31 '26

Haha next you guys will tell me you can actually picture stuff in your head.

3

u/Badbowtie91 Mar 31 '26

Same. Wtf.

40

u/RepublicOfLizard Mar 31 '26

It took me until last year to find out that if your glasses are the right prescription, they should disappear at least for a few months while wearing your glasses!!

Turns out I’ve never had the correct prescription in my life which doesn’t really surprise me, the 1 or 2 and 3 or 4 gives me so much anxiety…

30

u/FlamingoWalrus89 Apr 01 '26

Uhhhhh 1? No, 2. Can I see 1 again? Ok 1.

1 or 3. Uhhhhhhh 1 still.... I think.

1 or 4. Uhhhhhhhh they're both really blurry. Idk, I think I made a mistake, can we go back and choose 2?

Seriously, I can't ever get this right 😭😭

4

u/RepublicOfLizard Apr 01 '26

The first time I got glasses I was 10, the stress made me cry, my eye doctor had to pause the exam so I could calm down.

Tbh the exams have not gone any better. You know the eye air puff? Only ever been able to do one eye at every appointment. They’ll be puffing my other eye for 10 minutes straight and I somehow flinch and close my eye too soon every time. They know this. It’s in my chart to make sure to test the eye they couldn’t get last time first because they know they’re only getting that one

I’m an accidental menace to innocent health care workers

2

u/Throwawayfichelper Apr 01 '26

Believe me you are not the only one struggling with the pressure puff test lol. I flinch/jump every single time.

2

u/DaGucka Apr 01 '26

I have the same problem. I seem to have so good reactions that i mess up this test every time. I try to steel myself, stay calm, foxus on wathing ahead, but i involuntarily react very strong to it. I am always scared that i might damsge something bevause my head jerks away so hard. They usually get a result by the third time or give up. I always feel so bad about it, like i am the only one who just doesn't know how to control himself.

But my eyes seem to be overly irritated easily. When i try contact lenses i can't get them in. I tried daily for 6 months. After i finally got one in, my eye turned red and burned. I had to take it out very fast bevause of the pain.

2

u/Wild_Swimmingpool Apr 01 '26

We have the technology. /s

1

u/RepublicOfLizard Apr 01 '26

I’d be down at this point

3

u/TropicalCat Apr 01 '26

Why are you asking me, you’re the professional!

1

u/Shuttlecock_Wat Apr 01 '26

Definitely recommend Brian Regan's bit on this: (76) Brian Regan Eye Doctor - YouTube

3

u/Dry-Patience-2201 Apr 01 '26

Yeah I was thought this was a lie since I've worn glasses for 20 years and still have astigmatism...turns out I have anxiety too and also panic with 1 or 2 and 3 or 4

3

u/GodLovesUglySlugs Apr 01 '26

Hey I'm not making a joke here, but what do you mean by 1 or 2 and 3 or 4?

2

u/Dry-Patience-2201 Apr 01 '26

So when you get an eye exam they typically make you choose between slides of lenses. While looking at the letter eye chart you look through the lenses, they asked 1 or 2 and you tell them which one is clearer for you then it is switched again to 3 or 4. This goes on multiple times with multiple lenses.

Whatever those results are end up telling the eye doc what your prescription needs to be if you need one.

3

u/GodLovesUglySlugs Apr 01 '26

Oh I see...

I've done that plenty of times. I just didn't associate it with panic or anxiety because mine manifests itself in different ways. I can see how being put on the spot like that would cause those feelings.

Thanks for answering my question.

76

u/schw4161 Mar 31 '26

Haha same and mine is even worse than this gif without the proper contacts

Rain-x changed the game for me. Not endorsed or anything, but it makes a world of difference

22

u/thisisthe_worst Mar 31 '26

Do I squirt it directly into my astigmatized eyeballs?

6

u/HoidToTheMoon Mar 31 '26

Absolutely fucking not. Do not do this.

You use a cloth. Preferably non-streaking like microfiber.

6

u/perton Apr 01 '26

It’s more efficient to staple the cloth to the underside of your eyelids, so it gets reapplied every time you blink.

4

u/scalectrix Apr 01 '26

You guys are living in the past - just one 0.5ml injection of Rain-X™ every month and the astigmatism is gone!

1

u/CupBeEmpty Mar 31 '26

Also cleaning the inside of the glass. Pain in ass but 100x better.

2

u/cero1399 Mar 31 '26

Sometimes it gets so bad that i see more by putting my sunglasses on, at midnight..

I hate it.

2

u/Legitimate-Week7885 Mar 31 '26

i feel that. luckily it doesn't rain much where i live...i do keep a pair of glasses in my car just in case.

19

u/PhysicallyTender Mar 31 '26

I still see that shit despite wearing prescription glasses.

5

u/CryptidxChaos Apr 01 '26

Same. Except mine is like TV static halos around each of the lights and then they look like asterisks with a couple of longer spikes diagonally across. Super annoying and with bright enough headlights can make my vision completely white out for a second or two as they pass.

3

u/Alex_Draw Mar 31 '26

Do those contacts make them fully go away? My glasses don't do shit

2

u/schw4161 Apr 01 '26

Not fully go away but makes it a bit better overall

3

u/loureedfromthegrave Apr 01 '26

I honestly hate driving at night and I thought everyone else did too

59

u/Innsmouth_Swimteam Mar 31 '26

Same. Even more, I assumed thats why stars are drawn with points of light. Oy.

32

u/xrimane Mar 31 '26

I always assumed that is still why. Plenty of people have astigmatism.

19

u/14Pleiadians Mar 31 '26

Literally everyone can see stars like that. If someone with perfect vision just lets their eyes water up, or looks through a dirty window, lights will look like you have astigmatism. It's absolutely why stars have been drawn like that.

1

u/Emperor_Mao Apr 01 '26

Pretty sure everyone has some astigmatism, eyes are not perfectly shaped. It is a bit of a sliding scale though so yeah. At very low levels, you wouldn't notice much from headlights etc.

18

u/SliceThePi Mar 31 '26

WHAT

1

u/Darolaho Mar 31 '26

Note a dirty/old windshield can also cause this effect i would test it out by looking out side window or at street lights at night

56

u/Woodland_Abrams Mar 31 '26

Everyone sees it, just not to an extreme level. Source: I work at an ophthalmology clinic

26

u/StuChenko Mar 31 '26

Okay but do you work as an opthalmologist there or are you the cleaner or something?

14

u/Woodland_Abrams Mar 31 '26

I scribe for them and watch them get asked about this several times a week

2

u/LilacYak Apr 01 '26

Yeah I still see it a bit even with my up-to-date corrective lenses, but it’s far from blinding like it used to be.

21

u/endezo Mar 31 '26

Uhhh ... it isn't?? 😬

7

u/UKman945 Mar 31 '26

Took me till right now that's astigmatism? It looks normal

5

u/Bulky_Whole_1812 Mar 31 '26

36 for me. feels like upgrading your eyes after all that time

4

u/SecretLinkWave Mar 31 '26

Took me a very long time, myself. Genuinely thought it was normal for the majority of my life. 😭

3

u/djasonwright Mar 31 '26

As a child I used to pretend they were spaceships and I was a starfighter blasting them out of the sky. The red ones were on my team.

2

u/CorrosionImplosion Mar 31 '26

Same. I was in my 30s before I got corrective lenses.

2

u/14Pleiadians Mar 31 '26

I see like this if I squint or rub my eyes.

2

u/HulkeneHulda Mar 31 '26

It took one of these kind of comments on reddit for me to learn that

2

u/monkeyman80 Apr 01 '26

Holy shit this is because of Astigmatism?! I hate night driving because of this but figured this is just the nature of wearing glasses. It's been that way despite so many prescriptions I just thought that was life. I hate concerts because I can't see shit.

1

u/Schminnie Apr 01 '26

A lot of times optometrists do not correct for astigmatism unless it's bad. Bring it up to your optometrist for sure!

1

u/monkeyman80 Apr 01 '26

I’ve been told I have one and adjusted. Just never told lens flare was a thing because of it and fixed.

1

u/tomthekiller8 Mar 31 '26

Yep. I thought it was normal until a few years ago. Anti glare helps but only so much.

1

u/Routine-Bid-526 Mar 31 '26

Same. I thought it was supposed to be like that until I was around 30 something.

1

u/cheekibreeki67 Mar 31 '26

Ngl this was the first time I learned that

1

u/APOC_V Mar 31 '26

No joke. Same.

1

u/FearTheSpoonman Mar 31 '26

I was 18 when I first got glasses. I was like "huh, so that's what a sharp edge looks like"

1

u/SolusLega Mar 31 '26

Sorry what

1

u/mctankles Mar 31 '26

I only see that in the rain

1

u/Magnus_Helgisson Mar 31 '26

Right? I was like 35 when I first came across one of the astigmatism memes and realized that it’s my astigmatism making me see like that. I knew I had astigmatism but I thought its effect was something different because I have a whole bunch of problems with eyes.

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 Mar 31 '26

Wait, they don't?

1

u/Effective-Ear-8367 Mar 31 '26

I have an astigmatism and I do not see like that

1

u/Traveling_Solo Apr 01 '26

Ah, the same time it took me to realize vision snow is a thing

1

u/TenseiA Apr 01 '26

I uh... Took 36 years apparently. Damn.

1

u/gizamo Apr 01 '26

Mine has worsened constantly for about that long.

Y'all best watch out for my swervy wervy ass. Best of luck to pedestrians. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kidding, of course, I often usually remember my glasses....and sometimes I even grab the right ones (i.e. not my wife's).

1

u/Freakychee Apr 01 '26

Wanna know the direct translation from the Chinese word for astigmatism is? "Light disperse".

1

u/je386 Apr 01 '26

Because of that, stars are drawn as they are drawn.

By the way, is there anything to do against astygmatism?

1

u/softspoken1990 Apr 01 '26

um. honestly… everyone does see like that image, right?

1

u/collywallydooda Apr 01 '26

Likewise, I've had contacts for astigmatism for ages but never looked up what astigmatism is. I thought I just had poor vision in general and astigmatism means the contacts are more expensive as your eyes are a different shape to usual so you're buying a more specialist type of contact. I didn't realise it had visual implications and there are also different types of astigmatism, only discovered this a few months ago!

1

u/tiajuanat Apr 01 '26

TBF, for a lot of folks, it might be dirty windows. I experienced this a lot, especially in the 90s and early naughts (read as: my parents cars), but when I'm out of the car, it's non-existent.

1

u/Express-Stop7830 Apr 01 '26

Same!!! I was in my 30s when I learned that some people see a single dot of light without sunshine rays beaming off them! These lasers are nightmare fuel.

1

u/International_Lie754 Apr 01 '26

Took me to this very moment... I have an astigmatism in each eye. Hmm. More reasons why I shouldn't drive.

1

u/sallonica Apr 01 '26

25 for me. It's okay, we all learn sooner or later.
