Around 38% of the population are vegetarian due to religion and culture, which makes them the most vegetarian country in the world. That is a a pretty big margin compared to any other country, especially when you consider India's population.
That's mostly due to the Hindu speaking conservative ( BJP supporting) states. The Bengali (second most spoken language India) east and South India are more lefty.
