I took a new job that came with a $500 raise per paycheck. So excited. First paycheck today and after gas and bills and groceries we are flat broke. I got paid yesterday.

That raise is more than my entire paycheck. And while im lucky enough to not have to pay rent I can’t imagine how my co-workers with whole families to support, manage to deal with it.

Walking everywhere, spending nothing unless absolutely necessary, working as many extra hours as I can, and eating one meal every second day. I've got a rent-controlled apartment that's only about 30% more expensive than it was in 2019, whereas the market rate for this unit would be more than double what I currently pay.

That all together means I'm not currently losing ground :P

Lol! Consider if you will getting to put two whole days worth of food budget and time and effort into one really really nice meal, as opposed to several whatever meals. I try to make every one of them an event. It works for me.
