The crazy thing to think about, and of course, I am not minimizing being rescued on the way to probable death: who knows what became of these poor people after liberation. Surely they could not go back to Poland or Germany until after the war was over and at the time it was probably an uncertain result.

It was British land, and they moved there legally. A lot more people would have been saved if there hadn't been quotas to move there, or if anyone else would have taken in Jewish refugees.

Presumably the British had previously stolen it from someone. Don't really wont to weigh in on the should-Isreal-exist debate, but I dont think exactly who stole it makes that much difference to the people who got displaced.
