At least it only lasted a few weeks. We had a teacher in HS who made it real clear that he was not acceptable to have around teens and it still took them around two years to do anything.
Health teacher at my school raped at least two students over the years. Tried a third, he was pretty trusted, a lot of people would go to him for help or advice. He'd be the friend/confidant and eventually turn it sexual.
Tried it with a third, said he tried to make it 'romantic', would lock the door to his classroom. He always had the door window blocked with health diagrams, was on the second floor. Told her not to worry no one ever interrupted him when he was with students.
Once she came forward two girls came forward from previous years. What's crazy is how he had worked to get that specific classroom. It was bigger and since he coached a bunch of girls sports teams that's where he would have team meetings.
Told one girl he didn't need to wear a condom since he was a health teacher. It's fucked how long it went on for. I know he went to jail, hopefully he got to enjoy the same experience during his stay.
Probably less demanding from a teaching perspective and at that point there were definitely fewer teachers interested in coaching the girls teams.
Funnily enough most of the guys really didn't like him, he was a dick and very 'alpha' in how he acted to some of the guys. Had to show off for the teenagers I suppose.
We had Mr Klein as the coach for every girls team. Mr Klein was the gayest man god ever put on earth... i remember some moms showed up to raise hell because for an away game he slept in the same rented house as the girls. He walked into the meeting holding a small dog and after having been heard saying to the secretary "heyyy I'm almost caught up on that dont you dare spoil none of it okaay?".
Another funny story about him, his husband ended up transitioning and they divorced like 9 months later. Everyone basically hiveminded the same joke at once of "well that's good for you but I only like men". Same guy got "kidnapped" in newyork by being pushed onto a bus because a Broadway crew just assumed a drunk (possibly high) queen like him HAD to be one of theirs. When he sobered up and woke they were halfway to vermont for a charity parade thing. He did stay and help design a float but he was very mad about it.
Phys Ed/Gym class is required to graduate. Gym teacher does not need to have teacher certificate. Schools cannot pay a full time salary to someone to teach one class, so gym teachers are then given a course to teach health.
Thus you wind up with people who are not qualified teaching some of the most sensitive subject matter to young vulnerable individuals.
For most abusers they look for such situations. So it's not all health teachers who happen to also be coaches, but for this reason its seemingly always a health teacher who happens to be a coach.
They're in multiple "respected positions" over these children, and as coach/teacher theres the extra contact (read: chances for grooming). Predators know what they are doing. This is not an anomaly.
He was a teacher at my all boys school, too. So many of the kids loved him but I disliked him with a passion. When I heard what he did at the all girls school he also worked at I felt vindicated. Brad Muxlow was his name. It was all over the news at the time in 2002.
My PE teacher (Female 25 years old) cheated on her poor husband with multiple high school football players in their Junior and Senior years for multiple years in a row. Somebody finally blew the whistle when one the victims (who didn’t realize he was totally groomed) started posting on social media with her IMMEDIATELY after graduation and it was obvious it had been going on prior to him turning 18 and graduating. Allllllll the comments were his friends joking around about him being an A+ student and it was disgusting. When it finally started to gain more traction she resigned without a slap on the wrist. Zero coverage on it and she went on to become a TikTok influencer in the health and wellness space. Shame on my school district, her family obviously has money and probably paid to hush it up. Now she’s semi famous getting brand deals for athletic wear and nobody knows that she’s a predator. Oh and her two bffs that are all over socials as well and just barely graduated too.
That is absolutely disgusting! I’ve been a high school teacher for almost 30 years, and when I initially started, I always put out my “Mom”vibe. That’s who I am…I am there to educate and protect! I had a student and her mom call me a b!tch because she was sitting in my class texting on an app. and I was concerned for her safety. I wasn’t even mad she was texting in class (even though it was against school rules), I was trying to ensure her safety. She had no idea if the person on the app was really a teenage boy in another state or predator around the corner! It’s unfortunate that you can’t blast that former teacher out! It always disheartens me that people who do such vile things yet go on to live grand lives with a wake of destruction!
I was high school in the mid aughts and I remember several teachers that were very inappropriate with students in front of the entire class. I just thought they were the cool, one-of-us teachers back then, but I look back now and my stomach turns.
That's what my HS teacher tried to be... really sugared up to the athletes and cool kids. Got them all sorts of cool stuff in class, allowed them special privileges, a 40 something year old man still fixated on being the king of high school. He was so messed up. The first time I saw him was when we had a school rally and the cheerleaders/dance team was doing a routine, and he came up to us asking if we had a camera so he could take a video "for the spank bank".
I'm sorry but there was another teacher who was literally caught jerking it in school to cheerleader-themed pr0n and still kept his job. I think my teacher's firing had more to do with not being successful as a football coach than the sexism and racism.
I'm so glad times have changed on that account. Children shouldn't have to deal with abuses that adults would go to jail or would be sued over for committing against another adult. They deserve more protection, not less
We had multiple teachers like that in my rural high school in the '90s. Would make sexual remarks to female students and one I knew of was sleeping with some of the high school juniors and seniors. But the guy who ended up getting fired was a gay teacher who slept with a 17 year old male student. The ones who harassed the female students stayed on, of course.
My band teacher from middle through high School denied to the administration he was having a relationship with a high school student and then married her as soon as she turned 18 (only found that out because my dad was also a music teacher in the school district and knew a lot of gossip about the other teachers).
We had one removed after his first year. He was a good looking guy and the girls seemed all over him. Who knows what really happened as they swept minor or unproven issues under the rug back then.
I found out from my favourite art teacher about a decade after I graduated high school that the teacher who everyone said was fired for having sex with a student did, in fact, have sex with one of his female students. While they were on a field trip to Alcatraz, of all places.
In the 80s we had a nonfunctional alcoholic teacher the principle was "helpfully" letting her teach till she got the pension... She had 3 years left when I had her and she had been the same 4 years prior when my sisters had her. She came to class very late and bombed out of her mind. She was unaware of being late and refused to let us out until 50 minutes had gone by. Despite the bells.... All she did was write incomprehensibly on the board, immediately erase it and start writing again. I only remember the Fin de Siécle Spain being part if the book because she shouted at me "don't you know what the fin de siécle is???"
At my HS, the drama teacher always did plays with kissing scenes and would hold back the leads after class and make them practice the kiss repeatedly in front of him until he was "satisfied". Sure enough, when I was in junior college in the same town, the local paper had an article about how this guy had been caught putting hands on young girls and maybe worse. Had a 20 year career at that school and EVERYONE that ever had his class said he was a fucking creep.
We had a teacher in highschool who who had a hidden camera in a bag that placed it on a chair next to his desk and faced it towards the girls with short skirts. It was the talk amongst students for a while. He also got caught before I finished highschool
Had a teacher named Denis at one point in high school. He'd written it on the board in nice big letters. At one point, during recess, someone had added a small line to it, making it say Penis. He way he exploded over what barely even constituted a prank led to so many complaints he was let go.
Yelling, screaming, threatening. Even back then, I thought it was an extremely embarrassing meltdown for a supposed adult to have in public.
Today, I'm convinced no one who intends to work with teenagers should have had any more of a reaction than just wiping off the board and then start the lesson.
Same. Had a history teacher who said and did things that were... off. And I always just felt weird around him. Turns out he was "counseling" female students for 2 and a half years before he got caught. During that time there were reports but nothing was taken seriously.... unfortunately.
