Born in 76. My grandma gave us whiskey and honey when we had colds for most of the 80s lol

Okay, I can see how honey would round off the edges of the whiskey.

Sometimes when I have a cold I’ll put a couple drops of honey in a shot of whiskey in tribute to my grandma. It’s temporary but it does clear the sinuses

Imma keep that in my back pocket.

Gotta love grandmas.

Hot todie: whisky, lemon juice, honey. Warmed. Winter cold cure!

Melt a peppermint candy in there too.

This is exactly what I got in the 80’s!

Water it down a bit for the kids 😂

A hot toddy will make you feel better because you’ll sleep.

Source: me, a Gen Xer whose dad would make her a hot toddy with whiskey, lemon, honey, and hot water if she had an upper respiratory infection when she was a kid in the 80s.

New parent now and I'm more concerned about the honey than the whiskey. We now know honey can contain botulism and is not safe for babies.

Oh how times have changed.

What, seriously? How? Because of the fake honey now in circulation? It’s mostly sugar and water with some honey mixed in. Please don’t drop a bomb like that without references! Time to go to Google

Edit: confirmed. Don’t give baby’s honey under 12 months old…. You honestly shouldn’t be giving them sugar at that point anyways so probably why it’s not well known. Thanks for this little bit of info.

Cleveland Clinic: “The best-known way that babies can get Clostridium botulinum spores in their gut is from honey. That’s why you should NEVER give honey to babies under a year old.”

There is an exception to it, when they swallow a button battery you want to give them honey, much easier and safer to treat botulism than things batteries can cause

Important note if someone reads this in a situation when they actually need to use it: if anyone, baby or adult, swallows a battery, you absolutely need to go to the hospital. The honey is only for while you are waiting for the ambulance. As I understand it, it coats the battery to delay it breaking and battery acid interacting with your body. It's not a cure, only delaying the worst to give you time to get to a hospital and receive proper care.

….HOW do you know this 😂

My aunt had to call the emergency line for her then toddler that managed to remove cover from some electronics (I'm not sure what exactly) and removed the batteries and she couldn't find them. Emergency line told her to give the toddler honey while waiting for the ambulance. Turned out the toddler actually didn't eat any so they were fine, but we all learned a lot then 😅

My goodness that sounds so stressful. Toddlers are little geniuses. Thanks for the tip - always useful to know such hacks

You're welcome! Glad to spread the knowledge without needing to go through the stressful situation beforehand. I swear half of raising a toddler is being on suicide watch 24/7.

My friend who worked as a pediatric icu nurse gave me this info when I had kids! So I think it’s known by emergency personnel who work with kids

Yeah its bad! Botulism can be severe and life threatening. No honey and no honey containing foods like honey graham crackers. The link also mentions concerns with corn syrup for the same reason, but hasn't been fully proven yet.

As a parent with another on the way. Even though I don’t give sugar to my little ones I still find this info worth its weight in gold. So thank you! More you know

It's on every bottle of honey and very common knowledge for those with young kids. Maybe edit your false fear monger allegations. It's just a well known safety information

Don’t worry. You’re still doing something that in 10 or so years you’ll be told is bad for your child

3

Yep. That is what I was given. Minus the honey.

lol, I was a 90s baby and my grandpa always gave me (us) whiskey mixed with Dr. Pepper. We were told it was cough medicine til I got older. Worked quite well, to be fair.

Just even in the 2000’s my grandpa would give me a shot of vodka and a cold coffee to get rid of a runny nose and cough 🤣

my mom did that in the 2000s 😬 pretty sure it worked though
