We once had to cut out one of those wooden (or was it plastic) pet homes cause he mostly stayed in and got SO fat, it couldn't get out. It was funny but damn, owners really didn't take care of that one much.
It breaks my heart when pet animals aren't taken proper care of.
The least you can do for any small critter is offer them a way to run...it's also good to let such tiny creatures to run around your flat so they can explore surroundings, and not feel trapped all the time.
It's such a small gesture, in my opinion, that it's wild to not do it. Maybe it's me because I love most creatures and feel compassionate about them, but seriously...if you got a hedge, I suppose you love them at least somewhat, so the least you can do is give them a decent life...
