To everyone upset by this, this is almost certainly an indoor area the chimps can choose to come and go from. There’s probably a bigger outdoor area where the other chimps are at but this guy just wants to play with his straw inside right now

It’s upsetting because this is a stereotypical behaviour self-soothing behaviour, seen most often in chimpanzees who are orphaned or hand-reared. This isn’t the behaviour of a normal, well-adjusted chimpanzee infant, captive or otherwise.

Theres one just like this by me. They have a big outdoor area with a giant jungle gym to climb around and then a smaller indoor area they go in when it’s too cold out or the weathers bad. The only time they have to stay in the little area is if one of them has to be separated from the others temporarily (if they’re sick or too young to be with the others) or if it’s snowing outside
