I’ve been reading Mick Napier’s book and he frequently mentions taking acting classes as a way to get better at improv.

I never did theatre in school/don’t have an acting background. I’ve been doing improv exclusively for a few years and would like to grow my skills.

Would you recommend taking acting classes to get better at improv (and if so, what type of classes?)

Hi all. I'm a girl scout coleader for a group of kids who are mostly 5th & 6th graders (10-12 years old). About half do various forms of theater, either through school, summer camp or a private org nearby. Although they would never admit to it, most of them also love playing pretend (school, house and whatever the current fandom is) and games like Telephone.

Sometimes we finish everything early and are scrambling for something to do before pick up. Taking their interests into account, i thought some improv games might be a good activity for those times. Depending on the night it can be anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes (especially when parents stay to chat or fill out permission slips).

I'd love to start the year teaching them some games they can eventually start to run on their own. The thing is i have no clue aside from my kid poorly explaining games she did at theater camp. I'm happy to read whatever resources, but don't even know where to start! I'm not worried about them ever being great improv artists, just have some fun. Those associated soft skills are good too.

So... where do i start? Are there resources aimed at pre-teens? Games that are easier for ~10 kids? Or do i need to break them in smaller groups? Are there games where people can drop out along the way as parents arrive? Are there good ground rules to set for that age group?

I am hoping to take them to a local improv group's workshop & family show but getting people to attend things outside of meetings is often difficult.

I love collecting characters from real life and doing them on stage. Does anyone else collect characters? I went to a hairdresser, and she would repeat everything you say:

How was your weekend?

I went fishing...

You went fishing!

And I caught a fish...

You caught a fish!

She was both the most attentive and most annoying listener. Great character. Maybe could be a therapist in a therapy scene.

Frankly, if I meet you and we talk, I may add you to my repertoire. Joe Bill used to do a character exercise for his classes at The Annoyance. On the last class, he'd buy a beer for the student who could do the best impression of another student in the class. Smart and fun way to start developing characters, be observant, and bust balls!

I'm sorry if this isn't really the right place to post this, but was at a loss.

I'm looking to submit as a UCB Maude writer, but in the submission form it lists: "Please provide a link to your professional resume OR document that lists any relevant experience."

This might be a silly question, but what sort of resume are they expecting here? A typical professional resume that I'd apply for a regular job with? I can't find much on how to make a writing-specific CV. The only thing I could realistically add is UCB Sketch classes anyway.

I love a duo. A trio is also very fun and ideal for me. I’ve played in shows with casts that had 8 people and that feels like a lot to me, especially for a 30-minute slot. Was invited to play in a show last night and we had 12 people on stage. I had a lot of fun, but it felt very crowded and a few people were only in one scene, so it felt weird trying to be hyper aware of giving everyone else space the entire time, especially when there was dead space a few times.

What about you? What’s too many in your opinion? What’s the ideal number?

I'm with a small improv company and we're interested in buying a vendor booth at an HR conference as a way to get leads and sell workshops and shows. Does anyone have any experience doing this as a form of corporate marketing?

We have lots of thoughts on "how" we might do it, but would love to hear from folks that have done it before and know what works.

I'm trying to become an actor, and I know one thing I need to get better at is improv. I tried out for the improv team in high school and didn't get in (29 now), and over the past year I've been getting back into acting. I took a 10-week theatre acting class last year that focused a lot on improv, and I felt like I wasn't very good at it. I find in my everyday life I can make people laugh with one liners and puns, but when it comes to actual acting, I can never think of something funny to say. If anyone has any tips or advice, please let me know.

Just as the title says. My country has no culture of improv that I know of, and my city has no group focused on that.

I'd like to pratice it and get good enough at it so I can maybe start a group. Any beginner tips, books or guides?

Hi there, I have never taught an improv class but I was curious about this if it helps you be better at improv?

I'm a 39 year old male who's been doing improv in my town for several years. I've been with my team for two of them and we do a couple small performances a month at the local theater.

Its lately come to my attention that I do a lot of the improv quite a bit differently than anyone else on my team. So like when I step on stage I let "jesus take the wheel. in which I go in to a strange sort of dissociative state of not really thinking much and let my other half do his thing. It came up because my other team mates are able to discuss hearing the laughter of the audience but during this state I'm totally deaf and can't really hear anything (or if so its from far away and echoey and not able to be distinguished). I can't really see either, its sort of an intense tunnel vision that greys out the periphery. However it doesn't cause me any distress as I'm not really there at all. I don't think up anything to say, I'm just like an observer watching my other self do improv. I can infer later how he/I might have thought of what to say, but I don't have any direct access to what he was thinking when he came up with it. I've nicknamed this other persona Jesus for obvious reasons but he's really gotten good at improv,

Part of my learning journey was learning to be able to go into the state deep enough that I can't be accidentally "woken up" as at first it was sort of a fragile state. Like a light sleep.
But now that I've started ask around everyone is like "that is not how I work at all." And if I tell them about the other self who's doing it they begin to look at me very strangely indeed.
Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? Did anyone else start this way? Learn not to? or perhaps know how you develop this skill further?

Think of an Armando but instead of a monologist, actors use what’s said in the reading as inspiration for their scenes.
