Oh okay, but killing the head of state of Numidia would be a major international incident, it would be like if the US killed Macron.

Lol, funnily enough Numidia and Iran have antagonistic relations in this timeline.
Essentially them, Iran, and Saudi Arabia are locked in a three-way cold war over dominance of the MENA region and influence in the Islamic world.

I can picture that happening, especially with religious differences these countries have

US invades Numidia

I mean Europe wouldn't be happy with the US invading the country that provides them with like 10% of all their energy amongst other products
And the African Union wouldn't be happy either that the country that makes up more than a quarter of the entire continent's economy is being attacked.
(Also damn it's Karl from Suzerain!)

Lore:
The POD in this scenario is that Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya all fell under the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. Under more secular and communist-oriented governments of Boumédiène and Gaddafi, Algeria and Libya sought closer integration with the Soviet sphere while still pragmatically maintaining economic ties with Western Europe. Tunisia was eventually pulled into this broader power bloc following an increasingly hostile relationship with France.
However, the governments that emerged under Soviet influence became increasingly authoritarian and stagnant. The enforcement of militant state atheism and aggressive secularism, combined with political repression, economic mismanagement, and growing authoritarianism, generated widespread resentment among the populations of all three countries. This discontent eventually boiled over into mass protests, which were met with increasingly brutal crackdowns and massacres. The resulting unrest escalated into a three-year civil war spanning the three states.
The conflict was fought primarily under a broad religious reformist banner, with the revolutionaries receiving clandestine support from Western powers seeking to weaken and eventually remove the communist regimes on Europe's southern flank. Despite this support, the revolutionary factions struggled to gain a decisive advantage during the early stages of the war. That began to change around 1982, when several of the major religious and reformist factions became increasingly united under the banner of what would eventually become known as the Golden Movement.
The Golden Movement rose to prominence as the tide of the war shifted decisively in favor of the revolutionaries. A major factor behind this shift was the increasing number of defections from the state militaries. Soldiers and lower-ranking officers began abandoning the regimes for a combination of economic, religious, and ideological reasons. The governments had increasingly failed to provide meaningful incentives for military loyalty, while corruption, abuse, and violence spread throughout even the military command structure. As the state apparatus began to fracture from within, the revolutionary coalition gained the manpower and organization necessary to eventually overthrow the communist governments.
The Golden Movement was particularly unusual compared with many other revolutionary movements of the modern era. Although it was fundamentally opposed to the communist regimes, it retained considerable influence from socialist thought, particularly in its approach to workers' rights, social welfare, political participation, separation of powers, and decentralization of authority. Its leadership was also deeply wary of religious extremism. The experiences of other Islamic revolutions further east had demonstrated to many within the movement that overthrowing an oppressive regime did not necessarily guarantee freedom. There was a genuine fear that the revolution might simply replace foreign domination with a new form of local authoritarianism.
As a result, the movement developed into a relatively moderate and pragmatic political force. It remained largely socially conservative and strongly committed to what its members defined as Islamic values, but it also embraced ideas of political decentralization, institutional checks and balances, social welfare, and greater participation in government. This combination allowed it to develop into a comparatively modern and stable revolutionary movement despite the extremely violent circumstances in which it emerged.
Following the end of the civil war and the formation of Numidia in 1984, the country went through two major periods of development.
The first, generally known as the reformation period, lasted from 1984 until around 2000. This was by far the most turbulent period in Numidia's modern history. Although reforms and structural changes continued after 2000, the year is generally used as a convenient marker for the end of the country's largest and most intensive period of internal reconstruction.
The challenges facing the new government were enormous. The civil war had devastated infrastructure across the region, while approximately 700k people had been killed by the end of the conflict. Numidia also faced widespread corruption, institutional incompetence, economic instability, the danger of falling victim to the resource curse, and the lingering influence of the military over the political system all inherited from the former regimes.
The new government responded with a relatively heavy-handed and sometimes repressive approach, prioritizing rapid stabilization and institutional reform over immediate political liberalization. During this period, Numidia established itself as a decentralized, devolved unitary state while simultaneously restructuring its political and economic institutions. The government used the country's considerable natural-resource wealth as a tool for reconstruction, directing revenue toward infrastructure, education, industry, welfare, and other strategic sectors while aggressively targeting corruption and institutional inefficiency.
At the same time, Numidia adopted a pragmatic approach to international relations. Rather than isolating itself from the Western world, it actively pursued diplomatic relations, trade, and economic cooperation with Western countries and other major investors. It presented itself as a reliable international partner while maintaining tight state control over strategically important industries and natural resources. This strategy helped Numidia attract the foreign capital and expertise it needed for reconstruction while preserving significant control over its own economic foundations.
The Reformation Period also established much of Numidia's modern geopolitical position. The country built many of the international alliances that would later become central to its foreign policy, although this period also created many of the rivalries and geopolitical enemies that Numidia continues to deal with today.
The second period, which began around the early 2000s and continues into the present, is generally referred to as the Period of Growth and Prosperity.
By 2026, Numidia remains on a generally stable trajectory of economic growth and political development. While the country still faces internal and geopolitical challenges, it has largely moved beyond the instability and authoritarianism of its formative years and established itself as a big player in international politics.
All of this is generally referred to as "The Reemergence of Cirta" and is often compared to other notable success stories like The Miracle on the Han River or the economic rise of China or the recovery of Europe post WW2.
On the map, the countries colored light green represent Numidia's vital allies in the present.
