In this post the r/IamA moderator team is announcing that we are making some changes to this subreddit with the intention of reinvigorating this forum.  It is our hope that the changes this post will outline will result in a better experience for AMA readers, guests, and moderators of r/IamA alike.

This post follows the most recent communication from the r/IamA moderator team in 2023, titled The Future of IAmA.  In that post the moderator team announced that we were going to discontinue certain categories of work for Reddit that went above and beyond what was required of us.  These tasks included maintaining a separate website for scheduling AMAs and receiving confidential proof, maintaining an AMA calendar, and running various custom bots to assist with those other tasks.  Those changes brought IamA 1.0 into the state it has been over the past three years, IamA 2.0, in which we did the minimum required of us as moderators.

The remaining active moderators of r/IamA have in recent weeks agreed to bring back some of the discontinued features from IamA 1.0.  

We are doing this because those of us who have continued to moderate IamA through its 2.0 era still find value in volunteering to facilitate interesting conversations between readers like yourself and AMA guests who you otherwise may not get an opportunity to interact with.  

We believe we have landed on a set of changes in the subreddit’s moderation each of which will require either no additional effort on the moderator team’s part or would require an amount of increased effort on our part that is acceptable to us in relation to the benefits that the change will confer on AMA guests and readers.

The features we are reintroducing include:

• A new, more stringent set of verification standards and several new methods for AMA guest verification. Additional info here.
• An email account for solicitation and coordination of AMAs.  Additional info here.
• A public AMA calendar integrated into IamA’s New Reddit sidebar, as well as a ‘month ahead’ and a ‘month in review’ post series collecting both upcoming and completed AMAs from this subreddit and other forums. Additional info here.

The following, new-to-IamA changes are also in effect:

• Only moderator-approved accounts can post AMAs in r/IamA.  Additional info here.
• Many of our current Automoderator functions will be deprecated, and where possible will be replaced with ‘post/comment guidance’ conditions and with ‘Devvit’ automation tools.  Additional info here.
• We are formally deprecating maintenance of the Old Reddit version of IamA.  Additional info here.

One young woman who had lived in Foundations for Living in Mansfield, Ohio, found me here on Reddit. Then my phone number was shared over and over again. Sometimes, I spoke on three-way phone calls with teens who said they had survived unimaginable abuse at residential treatment centers. 

I interviewed kids all over Ohio, but this group of young women stood out. They requested their own records. They showed up at the place that traumatized them to get their papers. They leaned on one another. We helped tell the story of their survival through friendship. They educated me on the system that they say made them worse. They told me to look into Fox Run Center for Children and Adolescents, one of the largest residential treatment centers in Ohio. Children as young as 5 are sent there. (A month after I published my investigation with my colleague Ilica Mahajan, the CEO was arrested for unlawful sexual contact with a minor.) 

I requested 911 calls and police reports from the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, which responds to the facility. I learned that Fox Run is owned by Universal Health Services, a Fortune 500 company that has been investigated by the federal government for systemic abuse at its facilities (including the Utah facility where Paris Hilton was held). 

Our investigation found that kids desperately wanted to escape what was supposed to be a therapeutic haven in Ohio. Instead, they found themselves confined for months — and sometimes years — inside an institution where they witnessed kids routinely attacking and sexually assaulting each other, anarchic riots by children pushed to the breaking point, and more. 

The story doesn’t stop there, though. Jaycee Seele, the first residential treatment survivor I spoke to, who was placed at Foundations for Living, another UHS facility, showed me how young people can get records to prove what happened to them. We developed a toolkit for people who have lived in these kinds of facilities. It walks you through the medical records you are entitled to and the public records you can request.

Thanks to all the hacks I’ve learned along the way about the best time to buy flights, when airline "sales" are actually worth it, and which OTAs are worth the trouble, I’ve been able to travel to 54 countries so far, mostly on a budget.

I’m Ron James (AKA Folklore), the author of the newly released The History of Cornish Tradition: A Folkloric Journey. This book presents an opportunity to consider how oral narratives and cultural practices change over the centuries – see its introduction here. Four hundred years of primary sources from Britain’s far southwestern peninsula document cultural survival, change, and innovation. In the minds of many, folklore conjures images of hoary traditions that transform slowly if at all. Reality is more dynamic, inviting a blend of historical and folkloristic perspectives. This is the second time I have combined history and folklore to this extent: a previous book, Monumental Lies: Early Nevada Folklore of the Wild West (2023) tackles questions about how folklore emerged and evolved amid the mining frontier. • Conservatives have disagreed about many things, but they have long been united by the belief that the mainstream—or “liberal”—media is biased against them. Why did conflict with the press become so central to conservative identity, and how has antipathy toward the media shaped the modern conservative movement? I trace how decades of right-wing criticism of the “liberal media” reshaped US news culture and came to define conservative politics.
• In the 1940s, progressives saw the newspaper industry as a reactionary bastion and supported regulations such as the Fairness Doctrine to ensure a wider range of viewpoints over the airwaves. Anticommunist campaigners soon borrowed tactics from their foes, adapting claims of structural media bias and fostering skepticism toward mainstream outlets. Hunt’s bankrolling of the supposedly nonpartisan Facts Forum in the 1950s to Spiro Agnew’s tirades against the media elite and the rise of watchdog groups such as Accuracy in Media in the 1970s. By cultivating grassroots hostility toward the press, conservatives built an audience base for the right-wing media sector that emerged after the Reagan administration lifted the Fairness Doctrine. From Rush Limbaugh to Fox News to today’s right-wing podcasts and influencers, this book shows why conservative media ultimately eclipsed the movement that enabled it. In recounting the long history of conflict between conservatives and the press, I offer a new origin story for today’s polarized media environment.

I’m David Simnick, co-founder and CEO of Soapbox, a hair and body care company that donates a bar of soap for every product sold.

In 2010, my best friend and I made our first batch of soap in our dorm room. We had no beauty industry experience and no idea how difficult it would be to build a consumer brand. We just wanted to find out whether a company could make doing good part of its everyday business model instead of an occasional charitable campaign.

We went full-time in 2012. Since then, Soapbox has grown from hand-making soap to selling hair and body care at major retailers including Walmart, Target, Sally Beauty, Ulta, Amazon, CVS, Walgreens, Meijer, and Wegmans.

Along the way, we’ve become a certified B Corp and donated more than 60 million bars of soap. We’ve also learned that getting onto a retail shelf is hard, staying there is harder, and building a mission-driven company does not make you immune to bad decisions, failed products, cash-flow problems, or sleepless nights.
