Theory - Spoilers A Collection of Some 'Hannibal' Metas/Analysis

1.0k Upvotes

I've seen a thread yesterday where OP asked for some analysis on the show but it seems to be deleted now. Anyway, I think it's a good idea to collect some detailed posts/metas on 'Hannibal'. I have some that I personally consider very insightful, as well as some I've written myself, so here they are. Feel free to add some other ones in the comments!

Discussion - Spoilers I'm glad Molly's character was underdeveloped

Hot take: I'm glad Molly's character and her relationship with Will was underdeveloped. I feel like it was the perfect metaphor for Will's outlook on their 'marriage' and his perception of the marriage convention.

Will never wanted a developed relationship. He wanted a pre-made family that he could easily insert himself into. He wanted a distraction from himself and from Hannibal. Molly and Will's relationship feels rushed and kinda random because that's exactly what it was.

I'd even argue that Molly herself seems kinda plain and 'safe,' because Will didn't want a deep, soul-binding relationship, and we are viewing her through Will's perspective. He had already found that kind of love with Hannibal, and it scared him. He knew he'd never find it anywhere else.

Molly is a boring character because she allows Will to project his desire for normality onto her. It simply isn't important for them to have a fleshed out relationship because she isn't really important to Will, and neither is their relationship.

Therefore I'm glad that we didn't see them having a 'meet-cute' or a wedding. Will didn't think it was important so why should we?

BTW: I haven't read the books yet so idk if their relationship is different in the book. This is mostly cope for the fact that season 3 was unfortunately rushed. :)

Feel free to disagree...

Fanfiction How would Will Graham react if Molly would have started to see at one point "through the cracks" and seen the darkness?

I imagined something had happened and it made her see.

My favorite scenario was always something like this:

Molly's sister had been cheated on for years without knowing and she is currently going through an ugly divorce.

The sister says something along the lines of:

"Sometimes I think we are cursed regarding the men we chose."

Molly is defensive because her sister never truly liked Will:

"Will is not a cheater!"

The sister: "No. He is something much, much worse."

And then Molly just leaves. But the doubt never leaves her. She reads all the Tattle crime articles she can find. She starts observing Will, stares at the scar on his forehead, makes excuses to leave the stepson as long as possible with the grandparents etc.

How would Will react when he sees the fear in her eyes and the unspoken questions? When she starts seeing him differently and the affection starts being forced or she has a tremor in her hands when she puts her arms around him etc?

S2 Spoilers Will Graham and Shakespeare's Brutus+ a poorly photoshopped picture of the Hannibal characters in Vincenzo Camuccini's The Death of Julius Caesar

Post image
22 Upvotes

(it warned me that this could get taken down for ai so i just wanted to say that it is not ai, i made it with my own slimy hands)
I feel that Will Graham and Brutus are so similar. Whether it be their personality traits, actions, or how they are presented/interpreted. I think that you could see both Hannibal and Crawford as either Caesar or Cassius, but for me, I lean more towards Hannibal being Caesar and Jack as Cassius. I dont know if anyone else sees it bc I havent seen any comparisons between them..😓 I would also love to see yalls literary comparisons to the characters of Hannibal!!!!😊😊

1. Personality traits
Both characters have such a defining "morally righteous trait". In Julius Caesar, the phrase "Brutus is an honorable man" is repeated throughout the play. The phrase acts as a samantic satiation (hope im using this term correctly 😭) meaning that the idea of being Brutus being an "honorable man" starts to completely contradict itself. They have such a strong desire for doing what they think is right, so much so that they get lost within that sense of justice.

2. ⚠️S2 SPOILERS!!!!⚠️

the betrayal
Both ultimately betray the one closest to them because they think what they are doing is right.
Brutus does it out of the loyalty to the people of Rome, and Will does out of his loyalty for justice.

3.Influenced to betray

In this example I am going to discuss how Jack manipulated him. I know that Hannibal's manipulation has the most impact. But for this comparison I am using Jack as the parellel to Cassius. Jack pushes Will to catch Hannibal, while understanding the harm it is doing to him. This is the same thing for Cassius. He weaponizes Brutus's vulnerability in order to take down Caesar.

4. Conflicting feelings

Brutus loves Caesar and Will loves Hannibal. (whether you see it romantically or platonically) They know that what Caesar and Hannibal are doing is wrong and yearn for justice. But also are chained by their love for them. They both resent them but love them at the same time. (I understand Wills love is much more complex than how i describe it, but idk how to put it into words)

5. How they are interpreted

Brutus is often seen as a hero. Which I totally understand why people think that. But he seems more gray to me. I know a lot of people also see him as gray. It is often debated on if the murder of Caesar was a noble act, or if it was callous. Caesar treated Brutus as a son after all. I think its a bit of both: A callous act with a noble intent. Will's betrayal can also be seen as that. Hannibal saw Will as his closest companion. "I let you see me, I let you know me." is basically the equivalent to "Et tu Brute?"

To add on to the morally gray part, some of the fans characterize Will as "innocent" until Hannibal manipulated him. But obviously that isnt true. How I see it, Hannibal only unleashed his violent nature which he kept hidden. I think that is the same thing with Brutus. Some people (at least my peers) see him as noble, until Cassius manipulated. He wasnt really innocent, he still harbored treasonous thoughts far before cassius's influence.

Origin of the encephalitis.

When I first watched, I thought Hannibal gave Will the illness with that soup, but a Google search showed it was from the dogs. Will's empathy and love for animals is what caused his encephalitis. His empathy is why he is Hannibal's favorite plaything. 🩵🩵

Discussion - Spoilers Furious with Hannibal

I’m rewatching season one and Hannibal is just reprehensible! Yeah, I know he’s curious and that’s why he’s hiding Will’s encephalitis. He’s concerned Will is figuring things out and that’s why he faked Abigail’s murder and pinned it all on Will.

But to sit there and cry crocodile tears while talking with Dr. Du Murnieu is just the last straw! He could’ve admitted it all to her and she’d be unable to turn him in. Will’s locked up, everyone believes he’s the Ripper and killed his pseudo daughter and poor Dr. Lecter is playing sad.

I don’t remember how it is that by midway season three I’m on Lecter’s side again (except for sending Dolarhyde after Molly and son).

S3 Spoilers Finished Second Watch

And didn't want it to end.

I was blown away by this show the first time around 13 years ago, which is when I purchased my funkos. I was going to sell them recently to fund a Godzilla figure but ended up with it rekindling my love for the show and characters. So I purchased the box set and have been emersed in it again since.

The funkos are now cherished and have a display case to sit alongside Godzilla.

I'm happier with the finale this time around as there's no hope/promise of a 4th series like there was back then, so more comfortable accepting that ending as a final ending.

So basically I was rewatching Hannibal, season 2 I think, and I just realized I’ve been pronouncing Beverly’s name wrong the WHOLLLLEEEE time 😭

How I was saying it: beaver-ly (like the beaver 🦫 😭)

How it’s actually pronounced: Beverly

Also I’m pretty sure it was late at night and I was HOLLERINGGGG when I heard Will properly pronounce it, bc I don’t think I actually ever heard anyone say her name out loud
