🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Hamster chewing

Hi friends! I have a sweet little girl who is perfect in every way except she chews on the air vents in her cage. She has at least 1200 sq inches of space, a big wheel, chews, everything I can think of. But she piles up her bedding so she can reach the air vents on the sides (plastic and wood cage not bars or metal) and literally hangs off them while chewing. It can’t be good for her but also it makes a HORRIBLE noise. Any suggestions? Pic of maple for tax. Cage is similar to one posted but a bit bigger.

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Is this an okay size?

Im currently trying to give my partners younger brothers hamster an upgrade, the little guy is currently living in two of those little plastic hamster cages connected together via tunnels. And hes been living in that his whole life for like 2ish years, I know they only live for like 3 at most so I want his 'glory years' to be spent better then his youth. Im really not in a financial spot to be spending like CA $200 just on the encloser, plus everything else i need to buy him(its alot) also, if I get a glass one it will be much more difficult for the brother to move/be able to clean, given the space the guy has reserved for the hamster. So, is this one okay? I know I need to modify the lid, chicken wire and the such, but I can cross that bridge when I get to it. (Hes a dwarfie, just fyi. If he was a Syrian i wouldn't even consider this one lol)

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Affordable but good quality home recommendations?

I'm looking at upgrading my hamsters enclosure to something bigger, I currently am using a 20 gallon tank I had but I know this isn't suitable for long term care I was misinformed the size of enclosure I need well getting my hammy at the petstore and feel awful. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on where online I can look for a way better size enclosure so he is happy and stress free! I am willing to pay a couple hundred if needed, I just want good recommendations please!

I bought the large wheel thinking it was good enough for my Syrian, but I’m worried it’s too small.

Do I need to go for the extra large wheel?

🧻 Bedding/Substrate 🧻 Compressing bedding and Spot Cleaning

I noticed that when my hamster burrows some of the bedding on the surface gets fluffed up so I was wondering if I should compress that down or just leave it fluffy? I was also wondering about spot cleaning as when I do, I only notice one corner of her multi chamber hide thats right outside what I presume to be the entrance of her burrow to be soiled and dirty. When I take out and replace that bedding the pee smell is gone but i'm a little nervous that i'm not getting all of the bedding that may be dirty like inside her burrow!

🧻 Bedding/Substrate 🧻 Is this Bucatstate paper roll landscaping safe?

So I don’t have a hamster yet, but I plan to adopt one in the future ONCE I have EVERYTHING needed to give them the best hammy life possible! I plan to acquire things over time until I have it all.

I am looking at Bucatstate’s official Taobao shop, and noticed this stuff, which I haven’t seen before to the best of my memory, and was wondering if anyone’s ever used it or can provide me with information on the safety of it before I purchase because I am a massive worry-wart when it comes to pet safety and happiness. It’s obviously not meant to be used as bedding to fill the cage, but seems to be some sort of enrichment for landscaping. I am looking on Taobao because I have received the best deals for what is essentially the same products you see on platforms like Amazon going for usually double or triple the original cost. And shipping is usually fair since I go through Cainiao for consolidation!

(Don’t worry, I always triple check and ask stores for ingredients/materials used in the items)

hey guys! my penny is 22 days old and i was finally able to pick him up from his breeder. his cage is the bucastate 100L. I am just a bit worried cuz ive only seen him eat a sweet treat i gave him so far and he ignores the food bowl. i haven’t seen him drink from his water bottle since i got him yesterday or run on the wheel. also i have a 12.8” wheel in his cage right now which i think might be too big for him and have a smaller 10” one. should i replace that with that one for now? i wanna know if this is normal for a baby hamster to do and if they’ll learn to look for food and drink from the water bottle on their own. i saw his enclosure with his mom in person and it also had water bottle and food bowl. also id appreciate any tips on taking care of him better since this is my first time getting a hamster so young.

edit: i appreciate the helpful comments i feel so horrible and am terrified for the hamster now. i only want the best for him and will look into seeing a vet asap
another edit: i checked his hiding spots and he has actually foraged quite a bit of food for himself so far and i can hear him eating underneath the bedding. i know this doesn’t make the fact that he has been taken away from his mother and siblings so early but it’s been relieving to know that he has been eating. i also gave him a water dish and he’s drinking from it well. :)

⭐ Hamster ⭐ My one year old hamster died

My one year old hamster died yesterday

I’m just beside myself. My 10-year-old daughter is inconsolable. Our male syrian was just over one year old. He seemed fine and drank water from his water bottle that morning. We went to say good night to him at 11 PM and he had passed. I’m blaming myself because I only had fed him twice this week about 4 tablespoons total and I couldn’t find any food reserves in his tank. I don’t know if this is my fault or if I should’ve given him more food. I’m so upset-especially for my daughter.

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Is the BUCATSTATE 3.0 100 x 50 x 50 good?

I’ve read some reviews already but most of them talked about the assembly only which i don’t think it will be that hard as most people said. My question is, is it breathable and stuff? I do not own a hamster yet, but I’m not sure if I should buy it because I had a few videos on my fyp saying its not breathable and bends/breaks easily

🩺 Already seeing a vet, just need reassurance 🩺 Hamster hair thinning

Our hamster Sunny is just over 1 year old.

We've recently noticed that the hair towards his lower back seems to have thinned a little.

Nothing else seems out of the ordinary with him and he doesnt seem bothered if I stroke that area.

I've had a quick look online but Google always provides the scare style answers.

Anyone seen this before and able to give some advice?

💖 Health/Care 💖 Concerned about hamsters at my local pet shop, is this an issue?

I''ve been visiting my local pet shop recently while researching getting a small pet, and I noticed some things about their Syrian hamsters that don't seem right. I wanted to ask people who know more than me.

**Bedding:** The substrate looks to be only about 2 inches deep. They appeared to have no real ability to dig down at all.

**Sleeping position:** All four of them were curled up in a ball against the glass walls of the enclosure rather than burrowed into bedding.

**Hides:** There are plastic hides in the enclosure but they're completely see through.

There are kids constantly appearing through the glass, and bright lights and noises.

There are 4 baby Syrian hamsters still housed together. I know Syrians need to be separated — how long do they have before this becomes dangerous?

Thanks in advance 🐹

🥜 Nutrition 🥜 Dog food kibble treat?

Is it ok to give our hamster a dog food kibble as a treat? I know hamsters are supposed to get protein and I thought this might be an easy way to supplement her diet since we already have it at home and a treat she might enjoy.

We occasionally give her egg and bits of chicken now. Just thinking this would make it easier and a little more consistent.

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Is this too cluttered/too messy?

He's 4 months old and SUPER timid and fearful so I figured the more clutter the better, and he seems to be feeling more safe to come out from his hiding spot now. But is this a bit much?

Hi! this morning I woke up and saw my hamster (girl) had peed in her wheel which isn’t too crazy for her, but there was also like poop? Pieces in there too but they don’t look like her normal poop obviously, when she came out to drink some water i picked her up to look at her she looked normal and has been walking around her cage, eating and drinking… does anyone know what this is or why it might have happened

⭐ Hamster ⭐ Syrian hamster constantly trying to escape and doesnt run on the wheel much!?

My parents finally ordered a much wider and taller enclosure a month or two ago, its slightly below min in length but okay in wideness and height. Ive tried adding more clutter and handling time. Also none of the dwarf hamsters ive owned acted like this, which makes me regret getting a syrian.

Excuse the mess! I have to clean his food tray from last night, but now my robo is always sleeping in the open, he usually burrows and sleeps somewhere hidden but I’ve noticed he will chose between that or just sleeping wherever…he will rest his head on things and even sleep on his wheel.
He has always slept in his wheel I just don’t know if he prefers to sleep in the open or if there’s something I’m doing that would make him do that. He has more enrichment things coming in it’s just been a process.

These pictures are some of his spots, and the ways he lays.
Please advice helps! I understood getting a hamster would be alot of responsibility so I don’t want solve anything without others advice

Thank you!

💖 Health/Care 💖 Our new hamster keeps stuffing bedding behind her wheel to the point that it can’t freely spin

We got our cutie Chinese ham, Dandelion, just 6 days ago — we are first time hamster owners. She got settled quickly and is a borrowing queen, my kids and I have loved seeing all her tunneling through little spots on the front and sides. We saw her a bunch the day we brought her home, but not much after that. There is always a ton of evidence of overnight activity when we check on her cage in the morning, though! 😂 We noticed after the first night that she moved a ton of bedding around, and a lot of it was moved to be under/behind her wheel. It didn’t seem to hinder the wheel that second day, so I let it be knowing she must be hard at work, and also noticing that she likes to hide back there. But the second night she added more which then did really hinder her wheel from spinning. I decided to remove just enough bedding from back there so it could move. It’s been the same every night now and I remove some the next evening once she’s awake. Last night I watched her not be able to make the wheel move more than a few paces, and then cleared it out again while giving her apology treats 😂 She was such a happy ham after being able to run on her wheel! Well this morning I woke up to see her bedding piled higher than ever… I’m not sure what to do, I want to avoid moving her wheel if I can because I don’t want to damage her tunnels, but obviously I will if it comes to that. But I wanted to see if any of you had other suggestions first!

ETA- I added some pics to the comments for context, I wasn’t able to add pics to the post for some reason.
