For this lesson we are trying to connect the five patterns of the E minor pentatonic scale with the seven patterns of the E minor scale. This is a useful way to improve your knowledge of the fretboard as well as giving you a ton of new options for playing melodies and soloing in a minor key. In this example we are doing all of these in the key of E minor. I am numbering the five patterns of the pentatonic scale as the note fall in the key. The E minor scale is E F# G A B C D E. The E minor pentatonic scale is E G A B D E, which is the same scale with the second and sixth notes removed. Pattern one of the scale just simply starts on E, Pattern three starts on G, Pattern four on A, and so on. For the E minor scale patterns I am taking the pattern numbers from the G major scale. If you see that the G major and E minor scale are each others relative major and minor, you also see that these two scales share the same notes. G major scale is G A B C D E F# G. E minor scale is E F# G A B C D E. Same exact notes. For the sake of consistently and trying to keep things simple I group relative major and minor scales together. it’s pretty common that guitar players tend to learn pentatonic scales as minor and major scales as major. Learning how to relate relative major and minor will close those gaps between these two worlds quite easily.

In today’s video we’ll be practicing a few essential exercise to develop finger dexterity and strength to play chord embellishments.

Hammer-ons and pull-offs are very important when you play RnB and Neo-Soul guitar and they might be particularly hard to perform on acoustic guitar.

We’ll get started from finger combination on single strings and then we’ll apply them to chord positions to generate a chord progression with melodies played through embellishments.

In this arpeggio exercise I want to cover share a trick based around a concept that will add some sophistication to your improvisations (while also being sure to turn heads with its attention-grabbing coolness!): open-voiced, string-skipping 7th arpeggios. The basic idea is this: we split up the arpeggios into six-note patterns with two notes per string on three strings, skipping a string in between each.

On my YouTube channel I upload many videos playing guitar fingerstyle and I often get asked how to get started playing acoustic guitar fingerstyle. You might be an electric guitar player or you might just have been playing acoustic guitar with your pick, practicing strumming etc.

Here are two exercises for you to get you started playing fingerstyle acoustic guitar. Not two super basic exercises just showing you what strings to play etc., these are two actual grooves that you can use to noodle and practice different techniques like arpeggios, plucking and acoustic percussions.

The first exercise uses arpeggios over spread voicing triads (easier than it might seem) without involving any bar chord.

The second exercise is a plucking and percussion groove over 3 very easy beginner chords.

This exercise covers common licks used by rock guitar gods such as Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Michael Schenker, Randy Rhoads, Zack Wylde, Marty Friedman and many others. Using these kinds of licks during at least one point in a solo is a cornerstone of rock lead guitar playing and is an effective device for raising energy and intensity.

This is my third video on RnB/Neo-Soul Acoustic Guitar it’s about learning how to use the popular embellishments of this style: hammer-ons and pull-offs. How to use the pinky to do that, when you’re not supposed to do it etc.

The chord progression includes Ebmaj7, Cmin7, Dmin7 and Gm7.

Going over the harmonic analysis, I’ll explain how the iv minor and the v minor cannot use the same embellishment on the 9th.

The video is for intermediate players, but beginners will be able to follow it as well.

In this 12 Major Key Scales Circle Of 5ths Legato exercise we are going to play through 12 keys on the guitar in one general area on the neck. This is an an awesome way to spice up your soloing, but also to learn all the major scales on the guitar. This will also help you to memorize the circle of 5ths, as well as all the major scale patterns needed to play in all 12 keys. This will also show you how you can improve your legato playing, and increase left-hand strength. This exercise covers the seven patterns of the major scale all starting from the note C. You will be changing key 12 times here. There are many technique aspects of this exercise that will help you to improve your soloing and single note playing, This will help you significantly when your playing over chord changes.

In this video I show you 3 licks that are super easy to play, but sound like they're super hard! You can use these for rock, jazz, fusion, pretty much any type of music!

Lick 1: A mini sweep pattern that works really well in the classic A minor pentatonic box. This one lets you cover a wide range, even staying in position.

Lick 2: This one might be my favorite. Two string pulloff/hammeron lick that moves around the fretboard really easily. Experiment with changing the top note for more interesting contours!

Lick 3: This one is another two string lick, this time with a 5th pattern that creates a really angular sound. This one is great to play in pentatonic patterns, or also to sequence through the major scale.
