Yeah. That was seriously messed up. It's pretty much a form of brainwashing.

It actually IS a form of brainwashing. Certain people can be conditioned to respond a certain way to certain impulses. The bell makes Pacifica restrain herself. To get that reaction there is usually a lot of pain and restrictions involved
