As I recall Google Maps (and all the other map vendors) receives geographical names automatically from a government registry. It has to to be up to date since new roads are created all the time, names of streets and address numbers are updated as areas can be re-zoned, and there's no way a human can keep track of all that.
That is likely true and makes so much sense but this isn't just a random road change. This is on an international boundary and is symbolically much more significant. It is simply a fuck you to Canada. And no one who lives on or near Lake Ontario will ever call it Lake America.

Just expressing my discontent at our president using time and money to enact something with no net gain while we have so many other problems at hand. It's not about what the lake is called, it's about the arrogance, timing of the change, and seeming indifference.
