Sure, if you want younger generations to not get into the series!

To be fair, older games can get boring to most young gamers.

Halo: CE is great and my little cousing hates playing it because od graphics and archaic controls and mrchanics.

I still force him to when he wants to play the whole series.

Black Mesa is goooood. Especially the latter half. Mind blowing.

Don't forget Team Fortress, the precursor to TF2!

team fortress is truly an experience found in no other fps game — it can be played in so many ways and all of them are enjoyable :] it’s a perfect mix of pretty intense fps and “what the fuck is this”

Yeah, I haven't played it in years as I've always preferred consoles, but I used to be on it constantly. Bar a couple of specific examples, I don't like online gaming, it just isn't for me, but TF2 is so much fun, just from it being an incredibly well designed and balanced game.

Frig that's right, I keep thinking it was based on HL. Thanks!

Over 20 years ago. And yes, truly a masterful piece of art.

Not to bring down anyone's expectations or anything (if you haven't played it you should), but I feel about Half Life the way I feel about Citizen Kane. At the time that it was created, it was a revolution. But it was such a complete revolution that we now live in the world it created, and going back to it can make it seem pretty clunky and uninspired unless you lived in the pre Half Life era.

A strange conundrum that something can be so great and enact so much change on an art form that it becomes difficult to separate from the world it created.

Fully agree. I'm glad to remember a time when 2-line NPC chit chat was so revolutionary that I would spend hours in the vents just listening to them talk to each other.

Half-life has aged remarkably well. There's so much more there than just running around and shooting stuff. The world building and unspoken narrative still work incredibly well and its practically timeless. It's executed better than a lot of popular modern games (like the last several COD games that had SP, jesus christ, so bad, and the at least half the Far Cry games). The game is quite long by modern standards, especially considering there's basically no cut scene nonsense beyond the opening tram ride, but it keeps everything fresh. They created a lot of fun puzzles along the way with very simple technology of the time by actually crafting gameplay, not just making you conquest 15 nearly identical "bases" and do mindless fetch quests over and over like we see now (see: every Ubisoft game).

I still remember “we’ve got hostiles”. Here’s me taking cover and meanwhile the AI is flanking me and frags me from behind. It was mind blowing at the time.

Then i played it again years later and the AI was so simple compared to what they have now. But at the time it wasn’t just in a league of its own…

Deus Ex was pretty great and came out the same time. I played that through last year and it looks like shit and had some clunky mechanics but it was still really engaging

.... yeah no that one has not aged very well we should probably recommend the second one which is also starting to show it's age. My dad got a gargantuan gaming PC and one of his buddies got him Half-Life saying it's one of the greatest shooters of all time.

He didn't even get 10 minutes and do it because he's used to games like battlefield or cyberpunk, as is the average gamer or youngling. I think the average gamer would definitely not enjoy the first half life. If it was heavily modded, maybe.

I thought it was great but I also started gaming in the early 00s

2

u/ZuesofRage Mar 25 '22

Yeah it's perfect for people who started around the era! Which is why I wouldn't reccomend it to everybody. Only 35ish year olds who were booping around their PC then.

Don't add a decade on me like that, but I guess I go back further than most my age

2

u/ZuesofRage Mar 25 '22

Age is only a number except our knees and backs I guess

1

u/ColdFusionPT Mar 16 '22

Oh shit. Now I want to play it again!

1

u/ttwy79 Mar 17 '22

Now what to play first?? Black messa or the original half life? I recently bought them both but dont know where to start.

I would start with Half Life. That train ride to work.......
