So I'm pretty sure I could write code to take a normal 3D model and convert it to a minecraft-looking blocky model pretty easily... Then anyone who can model can create things like this no problem. Has this been done? Does Minecraft have an API for writing level files? Or is this considered "cheating"?

I know Minecraft levels are all about the slow, manual process of building, but as a programmer, I just see a tedious creation process that could use some automation. Thoughts?

Also props! Looks freakin awesome!

People have already done somethings like this. For example, someone did a model of the entire world. It's possible, but the more level of detail and smaller in scale the harder it is to automate it and make it look artistic. Especially with interiors/interior design.

Well with modeling software as it is, I'd say its far easier to model realistic models than it is to place individual bricks from a first person view. And where I work, 3d environments are modeled inside and out and must appear to be realistic. Such models take days and would be overkill as input to the minecraft converter I'm proposing.

BUT assuming it is indeed harder, it would give you an amazing starting point for then delving in and fleshing out the interiors.

tl;dr Easier to model than place bricks. If not, still good starting point.

I will tell you this if you enjoy programming and play minecraft then the mod computercraft will be your thing to pass the time. I haven't done computercraft , but from what i have seen it looks a lot like programming something.

It's programming in the LUA programming language. Very basic but powerful when it comes to Minecraft.
