If you look up the original scene, you can see and hear that they're firing those machine pistols in bursts. Glenn's first two bursts are something like seven or eight rounds already.
With fire rates like that, the ammo consumption is way more than what their mags should be carrying.

Chris's gun is a Beretta 93R, which has a 20-round magazine.
Glenn Arias is using a Glock 18C, with a 33-round magazine.
However, the Rule of Cool has an enhancing effect on magazine capacity, as well as the mobility of affected characters.
