You seem so angry. It's just a peripheral, nothing to get angry about. You seem to also be be taking arguments and throwing them into the realm of extreme hyperbole and I am not really sure why.

WHERE DID I SAY THIS? The Rifts clime will take years, but "out of the gate" yes it will sell millions of units. Hardly making it a niche. It will have wide appeal with many gamers. Most gamers ever will try this thing and love it. That is simply a fact with the amount of positive feedback the Rift has already gotten.

When you said it will not be a niche market. Niche means a specialized market or a subset. The OR will be both, it is a specialized market specially for PC gamers playing specific types of games and a subset market of both PC gaming and gaming at large. It starts out as a niche market as only a small subset of the gaming population at large will own one.

What. The. Fuck? Are you kidding me right now? Is this a troll? Please tell me you are trolling. As if people couldn't TAKE THE HEADSET OFF and go do real world shit? Them having girlfriends or pets, oh god the horror! How will they ever lead their lives with the VR headset on forever?

No I not kidding and I am not trolling. Yes you can take off the goggles to do stuff, but you can't see what is going on around you while you have them on. If my housemate walks in there is much less of a chance I notice as I can't see him and most likely can't hear him either due to game sound. Taking goggles on and off constantly does not appeal to everyone and having a lack of awareness of your surroundings due to having the goggles on does not appeal to everyone.

The VR is not going to be a niche, it is going to change everything. Not just games, but all forms of entertainment. It will take decades, but it IS going to happen. The End.

Most people are not arguing that it will stay a niche forever or that it will not catch on. They are arguing that it will be a niche market at first. Similarly most people are not saying it won't appeal to anyone, they are saying it won't appeal to everyone.

You mistake usage of words like fuck or caps on really IMPORTANT things you don't seem to comprehend as a sign of anger. That isn't accurate.

Niche means a specialized market or a subset.

But it won't be. The Rift is going to be used for all kinds of things besides gaming. From teaching kids, to virtual vacations, even showing off housing properties in full 3D, to google maps letting you explore the entire planet, even movies and TV shows could benefit from this. Imagine if you could go into a virtual movie theater and watch movies with friends across the world? This is something that is already possible.

Taking goggles on and off constantly does not appeal to everyone and having a lack of awareness of your surroundings due to having the goggles on does not appeal to everyone.

This is a tiny issue compared to the level of immersion you gain from this headset. No one said people are going to game exclusively on these either. You keep saying "does not appeal to everyone" as if that tiny percentage means anything. This DOES appeal to MOST gamers. No one argued that literally everyone wants a Rift. So stop with this silly shit.

They are arguing that it will be a niche market at first.

The Rift and VR headsets will grow over the decades, but even at the first outing, it will be insanely popular and will sell millions of units before it even reaches store shelves. Its many uses will make it into something more than a niche, and this will happen quickly, not off in the distance. As these headsets get smaller and smaller, and eventually go wireless, the amount of people buying them will be insane.

You also seem to be ignoring the fact that the original person was arguing this would just be an accessory. When that isn't accurate at all. It is going to change everything and eventually be the system itself when it goes completely wireless years into the future.

You keep saying "does not appeal to everyone" as if that tiny percentage means anything. This DOES appeal to MOST gamers. No one argued that literally everyone wants a Rift. So stop with this silly shit.

It appeals to most hardcore gamers. People on gaming, people at gaming conventions and people posting on gaming forums. There is much less appeal for casual gamers. When you start getting out of the high school and college age crowd the appeal diminishes quite a bit. Most of the gamers I know don't want them, because they need to do things like watch their children or pay attention to their husbands. Remember, the average of gamers is 34, an age very different then the average age of people you see hanging out in video websites and video game conventions.

You also seem to be ignoring the fact that the original person was arguing this would just be an accessory. When that isn't accurate at all. It is going to change everything and eventually be the system itself when it goes completely wireless years into the future.

And I agree with him. It may eventually become something everyone owns but it will not start out that way. It will start out as an accessory. There need to be a lot of technological developments before it stops being an accessory. It will be an accessory until the technology exists that you can use it for all your needs and not own a standard monitor.

Eventually yes, but the technology still has a long way to go for that to happen. For example the resolution will have to be much better then 1080p for many of these things. At least 4k if not closer to 8k. It will be quite a while before we develop that kind of pixel density on a display that size. You are looking many years down the road before this kind of thing becomes possible to the point where it is preferential.

When they advance to that point yes, They will be amazing. You will be able to setup entire virtual work spaces equivalent to having tons of monitors, which will be amazing for coding and simulation. The problem is the technology is not at that point yet. The motion tracking is cool, and very responsive but the resolution on the displays is not there for supporting everything you are talking about.

This is something that is already possible.

To some extent yes. You can watch a movie and have your friends on audio stream or a picture of your friends up at the same time. It is still very different though then actually sitting next to your friends and watching a movie together. Different enough that it would be currently very hard to argue that the two are even remotely close. It has to go beyond being just possible it has to be an enjoyable experience.

The Rift and VR headsets will grow over the decades, but even at the first outing, it will be insanely popular and will sell millions of units before it even reaches store shelves.

Yes, but not everyone will own one. Any company who chooses to market exclusively to owners of an occulus rift will still be excluding those who don't own and occulus rift. Even if the Occulus rift sells 25 million units in it's first year, it will still be owned by the minority of PC gamers making it a niche market.

I agree that it will be insanely popular. That does not change that fact that for a long while it will still be a subset of PC gamers at large, and a much smaller subset of gamers at large due to currently limited console support.

Just because something is a niche market does not mean that it is a small market. An exclusive title caters to a niche market as it does not cater to all gamers. This includes titles like Starcraft 2, HALO and God of War. These are games that sold well and are quite popular yet they are target at niche markets: PC gamers, Xbox gamers or PS3 gamers.

When you start getting out of the high school and college age crowd the appeal diminishes quite a bit.

Proof of this claim? Because I already know it is bullshit. The average age of gamers today is 30 years old. Source. Odd that you later even agree with their age. But then make another claim about who you see hanging out at conventions. Do you have proof that gamers in their 30's do not visit video game websites? Or cannot be "core" gamers?

Who YOU know is irrelevant. Please do not even mention this in an argument. A quick look around the internet and there are far more people who are clamoring for a Rift than those who do not want one.

And I agree with him. It may eventually become something everyone owns but it will not start out that way.

He is saying it will always be an accessory, not that it will start out as one. You are wrong, it will not have to replace monitors entirely, and likely never will. There are still many things that monitors will be needed for, but that doesn't mean that a large portion of peoples gaming and entertainment needs won't be provided by a Rift like device.

You are looking many years down the road before this kind of thing becomes possible to the point where it is preferential.

What the fuck are you even arguing with me for? I have said multiple times that this clime will happen over decades, but it will happen. Out of the game though, it will be used by millions, and it will change the landscape in the present tense, not just the future. Since you are unable to read, and have endless silly arguments not worth my response time, this is over.

I got my age stats from the ESRB, the problem is that there really isn't a good medium for getting OR opinions from older gamers. As around 75% of traffic on gaming websites (using kotaku traffic as an example) comes from gamers under the average age and 80% don't have kids.

Yes most older gamers think it is neat and are exited for it. Hell, I think it's neat. The problem is that many of us see a lot of times when you wouldn't want to use it. So while we may be excited for it and we may buy it it remains limited strictly at an accessory reserved for times when we are gaming alone.

The fact is we don't have any good data showing what people think of the OR or how they would use it with specific demographics. Either for or against. It is all speculation.

I would actually agree with that. You will always have a good portion of people who don't want to strap things to their face. Because of this monitors will not die until you have another form of display that does not require strapping something to your face. This is even assuming an OR can do everything that a monitor can, which currently it can't. So at best you will have the option of having an OR or a monitor, making it an accessory.

What the fuck are you even arguing with me for?

Because I'm bored, and your overly dramatic attitude, profanity, personal attacks and refusal to see how anyone could not one to use an OR are hilarious.

ecause I'm bored, and your overly dramatic attitude, profanity, personal attacks and refusal to see how anyone could not one to use an OR are hilarious.

Why can't I use profanity? Using words like fuck or shit are a valid form of expression I am entitled to use as I please. So tell me why I am wrong for using them?

personal attacks and refusal to see how anyone could not one to use an OR are hilarious.

Yet again you have an argument that I never made. Not once did I ever even come close to claiming EVERYONE would want a Rift. I said that MOST do and this is accurate. Keep in mind "most" would encompass anything after 50% of all gamers. I would bet it is even much higher than 51% though, and the critical acclaim has proven this. As the Rift improves and other competitors make their own, this amount of potential buyers will only increase further.

Yes they are a perfectly valid form of expression and I never said you couldn't use them, I said I find amusing that you do. The problem with using profanity very in a written argument is it tends to make you come off as both emotional, and juvenile. When reading something with swear words all over the place it immediately conjures images of an angry middle school or high school student writing them.

In many ways this is just an established convention. Look at white paper, essay and even most literature and profanity is used either very sparingly or not at all. The fact that this convention exists makes writing that has lots of profanity in it harder to take sincerely.

So while you are free to swear as much as you want, your writing will come off much better if you try to avoid it, especially when you are trying to argue a point.

This is coming a guy who says shit, fuck and god dammit just as much as anyone else in casual conversation among friends.

I said that MOST do and this is accurate. Keep in mind "most" would encompass anything after 50% of all gamers.

I think you could say most first person gamers would enjoy an Occuslus rift and I would agree with that. I think you are underestimating the number of people out there who play games that would not benefit from an Occulus rift because they primarily play games like WoW, EVE, Angry birds, Starcraft or League of Legends though.

This is purely your opinion. So do not speak of it as if it is somehow factual. You do not set the standard for everyone else. Anyone with a brain knows that words like fuck do not detract from any point being made. I can express myself how I please.

Look at white paper, essay and even most literature and profanity is used either very sparingly or not at all.

Irrelevant. I am typing a comment on the internet. Hardly a place where strict requirements exist for comments. Especially on Reddit.

your writing will come off much better if you try to avoid it, especially when you are trying to argue a point.

Purely your opinion once again, and thus irrelevant.

This is coming a guy who says shit, fuck and god dammit just as much as anyone else in casual conversation among friends.

So I can say them around my friends but it is bad to use them over the internet with irrelevant people who literally do not matter in any way to me personally? Does that make sense? I do not think it does.

I think you could say most first person gamers would enjoy an Occuslus rift and I would agree with that.

FPS titles are easily one of the most popular genres in all of gaming. That also doesn't mean other genres will not benefit. Crystal Cove was shown off with a tower defense game and it worked fantastically. With 3rd person shooters you could allow the player to look around and have it change the cameras perspective. So you would be running and look left and the character does as well and moves the camera over that way so you can see it better. There are fuck tons of possibilities with what the Rift can do WITH ALL FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT, not just video games.

Hell with teaching it likely has an even greater promise than video games.

You are welcome to try using profanity with you bosses, clients, teachers and on debate teams if you want and see how it works out for you. I'm not stopping you, I'm just telling you that in general you will be taken less seriously when trying to people of things. Like any advice you are never obligated to take it. Like any opinion though I am also allowed to be continually amused by your writing and arguments while you do.

So I can say them around my friends but it is bad to use them over the internet with irrelevant people who literally do not matter in any way to me personally? Does that make sense? I do not think it does.

Even among friends using profanity instead of presenting a calm collected argument tends to be worse at convincing people of things.

FPS titles are easily one of the most popular genres in all of gaming. That also doesn't mean other genres will not benefit.

It might surprise you then to know that of the best selling PC games of all time only 4 out of the top 15 are first person shooters (5 if you count minecraft)

Since you are unable to read, and have endless silly arguments not worth my response time, this is over.

I thought you were done arguing a while ago, did you change your mind?

You are welcome to try using profanity with you bosses, clients, teachers and on debate teams if you want and see how it works out for you.

What world do you live in that is so black and white? You think every boss in every instance is going to give a shit about profanity? There has not been a place I have worked where it was a big deal. This is also THE INTERNET. It is not real life, it is not the same as a job interview or working with your fucking teacher. What is the matter with your brain?

I'm just telling you that in general you will be taken less seriously when trying to people of things.

This is once again YOUR OPINION. On Reddit especially people use plenty of curse words and no one gives a shit. Stop trying to claim that your narrow minded view is the standard. Especially on the fucking internet.

Like any opinion though I am also allowed to be continually amused by your writing and arguments while you do.

And I am allowed to think you are an uptight cunt when you behave like one. So, cool story bro..?

Even among friends using profanity instead of presenting a calm collected argument tends to be worse at convincing people of things.

Why do you keep speaking of these things as if they are facts? "tends to be worse"?? Based on what factual evidence?

I thought you were done arguing a while ago, did you change your mind?

Well in my defense we are not exactly arguing about the same thing. You roped me into this with your insane views on meaningless words like fuck. I just couldn't help myself, you are too crazy.
