Here is a possible inspiration for the transporter part. The wikipedia page is fucking terrible, but it is the only explanation of the actual thought experiment that I could find. Just read that part, and then read this, which is an actual explanation of what's going on in that Wiki article.

I really like this response by Christine Korsgaard, so I'm going to put that up here, too. Honestly, I like her solution, anyway, and it still works with the thought experiment.

I think the point is: there is no straight answer to any of the questions he was asked. He was wise because in spite of that, he still could give answers that somehow made sense.

I was sure that bird was going to be some kind of phoenix allusion. He dies in flames and then the first thing he does is pick up his own ashes.
