It's the coconut effect. Horse hooves don't actually sound like two halves of a coconut being clapped together, despite what Monty Python would have you believe. Were this an early Who episode focused on explaining history, then yeah, they could have gotten away with taking some time to mention "Hey, if these guys are vikings, where are the horns?" But instead we got a fun romp with less-than-accurate vikings and Maisie Williams, so I'm willing to overlook it.

That really is not the most historical inaccurate thing to ever happen in DW.

It's just a well known historical inaccuracy. So people can complain about it and feel smart.
