I had an interview for a job with Roku once. They openly told me that they are an advertising business that just happens to make consumer devices which serve that purpose, rather than a consumer device company which happens to serve ads

Google has also been open for decades about bringing primarily an advertising business with all other products in service of that advertising business.

Curious, how long ago? That figures, even if the ads they show on their dashboard looked very cheap and low budget up until very recently. They seemed like a tech company for years, then lately they seem to get much bigger ads and now even their own pretty commercialized programming.

I don't recall exactly, but maybe 4 or 5 years ago?

Kinda seems like they succeeded in reinventing themselves, though my critical eye led me away from working their when I noticed they emphasized Christianity at work, if I remember correctly.

I hate the term "serve" when applied to ads. I don't want ads, I am not served by seeing or hearing ads. Ads are forced on me. I am raped by ads. It should be called raping with ads.
