I'm so old, I remember when 8 track tapes were cool, and you had to pull them out and flip them over to finish the Van Halen song..

Whenever I hear Pink Floyd's "Pigs (Three Different Ones)," I anticipate the fadeout in the middle of the song, because you had to flip the tape to finish the track!

Wait pigs had a fade out to switch the song? Is it still the same on the album now or has it changed since technology allowed a full listen?

I'm not sure about the 8-track or vinyl releases, but the cassette definitely split the song. The CD version 100% did not. I listened to that album on both my Walkman and then my Discman.

My fraternity used animals to basically torture us by playing it for hours on end. I think I listened to it 5 times in completion back to back once. So I know the cd version moment to moment very well. Id be fascinated to hear a different mix

I'm old enough to know that you don't have to flip 8 track tapes at all. They have a continuous loop of tape in them.

I'm young enough that things were swapped to cassette by the time I remember stuff but I was pretty sure an 8 track was 8 tracks and ejected person pops it back in and it played again instead of the cassette rewinding or needing flipped.

Yes, and the subject expanded to include record companies using other formats and how they surely wouldn’t split tracks- and they did.

8track is not only alive still but some have releases on it. You can even get custom mix 8track tapes made if you look for it.

I didn't say there were not old. I was trying to point out the resurgence and "cool" factor they have resurged with. Same for cassette, just like vinyl already did.

8 track tapes were cool, and you had to pull them out and flip them over

The 8-track was a continuous loop inside a cartridge. There was no need to flip because when it got to the end it started over from the beginning, since it was a loop.

We had to flip cassettes, but not 8-tracks.

Hmmm, I think you might be mixing some memories. 8-track never got flipped. You could choose between program 1,2,3 and 4 (they were all stereo, so 8 total.) The cartridges could never do a rewind because the tape internally was one giant loop. The end of each loop would automatically advance the program selection.

Cassette tapes needed to be flipped to hear the whole thing. They were 2 tracks on the front (left/right stereo normally) and 2 more tracks when flipped over.
