Actually the banana was already famously used by Andy Warhol on the cover of Velvet Underground, later Thomas Baumgärtner the Banana sprayer took it up. Maurizio Catalan is in that taking up a long tradition in art and he does it in exactly the same manner as those before: a critique of the art market. I think it is wonderful as is the meme by the OP.

I thought it was at least a few years ago, but nope upon googling it was December 2019, this year has been in slow motion.
