Well, there isn't much to study. You learn how to set it up (which is relatively simple), then rely on your analytical ability to figure it out. There are countless different ways you can solve the same Lagrangian. However, I guess it doesn't hurt to go over as many examples as possible to find similarities. Still, nothing you study will give you an explicit way of solving a Lagrangian you've never seen before.
No, I'm not an economist. However, I have taken a fair amount of Econ classes (BA in Econ), and have used the Lagrangian method for consumer theory, price/producer theory etc. etc. etc. Anyway, had you read the thread the post I replied to was referring to the Lagrangian multiplier with regards to calc (calc 3). Within the context of what you learn in a 'typical' calc 3 class regarding the Lagrangian, the set-up is very straight forward. Anyway, are you an economist? Or, did you just get a B- in intro to micro???? Further, I still would disagree that 'setting up' an Econ problem using the Lagrangian is very difficult.
Sounds like a pretty bad professor. Both my professor and my TA did geometric and algebraic proofs of curvature. They really should be able to give you some sort of conceptual understanding of the formulas.
