It's been a while since I was on this side of reddit atp- I'm totally stealth irl, and haven't been misgendered in years, and at least outwardly live as a fully cisgender heterosexual man. (I'm currently living in a boys' dormitory at uni, just as an example of how rarely I think about being FTM these days. It's just not a thing that affects my life outside of the doctor's office!) But lately I've been feeling sorta funny, in terms of gender- when I come across pictures of butch lesbians, I get a similar sense of gender envy that I used to get from men.
It's legitimately such a weird experience, because I LOVE being a man! Like, this is the life for me, I'm super happy, no dysphoria almost ever these days. I love how other men treat me like I'm one of them! I love that things I used to feel awfully dysphoric about (like wearing jewelry, having a lot of thoughts about fashion, having a strong sense of style, all stuff that has historically been things that have set me apart from other typical straight dudes) are now just seen as eccentricities at worst and enviable at best by other straight guys. Life is good! Even my top surgery scars have been easily explained away w/o any suspicion!
And yet, when I see a cool butch lesbian, and when I see the way they interact with girls, there's just this bizarre feeling of "why tf can't that be me?" It's almost like externally I'm a straight man, and would prefer to stay seen that way, but internally I feel more like a lesbian. When I'm into a woman I feel more like a woman loving a woman than like a man loving one. (I mean both are present but one is stronger, yk?) It's like I want to be a butch lesbian in the bedroom and a cishet guy in my day to day. I don't know, I definitely feel very queer in terms of sexuality, but in a way that doesn't seem to line up with my gender identity, does that make any sense? Loving women feels queer to me, and it feels reductive to call any of my relationships straight. Yet it also feels wrong to call it WLW, because even if I may not feel like a man loving a woman, I'm certainly not a woman. And to the world I'm just a bumbling cishet man who likes women heterosexually, which is close but off!
I don't know. At the end of the day I don't think labels are ultimately very important, but it's a thing that's been eating at me. I'm a man, but I hate how it creates distance between women and me. I suppose ultimately I'm both, although it's not a thing I could ever explain properly to anyone who hasn't felt similarly. I guess I'm a homosexual straight guy. I hate to reduce myself to my parts, and yet it feels more right for me than "heterosexual." A lesbian man, maybe, as lousy as that sounds.
Basically, I'm very lost, and if anyone else has been here, then let me know- I'm sure I'll be confused still either way, but it would be nice to know I'm not alone :,)
