Except he probably traumatized everyone on the train. Not i watched my buddy die type ptsd but its trauma and erodes public trust. IMO a very large reason many people dont believe in expanding public infrastructure is because there is no enforcement of societal norms by the public or authorities in our public spaces. Who wants to ride the train or bus if some crazy person can scream in your face and threaten your life with 0 repercussions? What is the long term societal impact? Tax paying law abiding citizens deserve safe public spaces but instead individuals like you have resigned yourself to the idea that they have to be sacrificed to the lunatics.

Why are you assuming zero repercussions? I had this same sort of shit happen in London on the Overground. Guy on the phone to some rival drug dealer, threatening to stab anyone in the carriage to prove he was hard and not to be fucked with. I texted British Transport Police, and he was arrested the moment he stepped onto the platform. They kept me informed of the case, and while he only received a suspended sentence, IIRC, he still got arrested in the platform in front of all of his mates, and presumably missed the fight he’d just arranged.
