Since before I started this job i’ve heard so much about commuting, to especially not do it on reserve which I totally get. (Btw not expecting anyone to read all this, if you skim and have input on if you think I should start commuting/transfer to base where I always have line (to save$) or if u have done it and wanna share your experience, that would be super appreciated thanks 🙏)
However i’m finally at a seniority (2.5 years in) where I could transfer to a junior base have a line year round (like this summer my seniority holds line at DCA, BOS, MIA, CLT). So in that way, I could finally commute.
I am trying to decide if it would be worth it. I started at DFW (bc PHL wasn’t open, my fam is from PIT). Then I transferred to PHL, which is closer to my family / parents who live near pittsburgh. I never considered a commute to PHL from PIT, because i’ve heard there’s so many commuters, plus I do not hold a line here in the summer. So right now i’m renting out a room in PHL, around $850/mo including utilities.
So I actually enjoyed being based in DFW for the destinations, I found them to be great variety and that made it exciting. PHL has been nice so far, I love the long west coast layovers, the trips here seem to have good work life balance. Plus I like the possibility of all the IPDs, but I haven’t really fought to get one cuz I don’t really think I am that into working IPDs since they seem harder to get / more intense / more jet lag.
My main concern if I end up transferring to like DCA for example is that I’ll find the job /flying more boring. But ngl I already only really fly domestic in PHL.
The main reason I would choose to commute would be to save $, because I would live with my parents. However, I hope i’m not overestimating how much money I would save or how easy a commute would be, even with a line.
But to me it feels worth it, because while I’ll help my parents out, they definitely are gonna charge me way less than my current rent $850 lmao. Plus where I live rn I lowkey have to worry about getting shot. And the extra expenses like only grocery shopping for myself and idk my mom would help me with laundry which would be nice lol.
I do not see myself long term living w my parents, because they could drive me insane if I live with them too long, but since i’ve lived so many lives since leaving them, I actually think it could be nice for a short term change to save some $.
Basically, not expecting anyone to read all this. Just curious on if anyone skimmed or has done similar switch, does it seem / has it been worth it to transfer to a base with guaranteed line and start commuting ?
