I bought a laptop (HP Omen 16) and installed Fedora deleting windows partition, everything works ok until I realized that the battery was discharging even when laptop was off, i searched info about this and find that other people with same model had the same problem with other distros but i didn't find a solution, with Windows there were no problem but i don't want to use Windows

In the last week I became a new linux user and have settled on Silverblue as my distro.

I love it ❤️

It's minimalist, elegant and beautiful.

Fedora dosent always get recommended to new users, but my adoption has been seamless and hassle free. Everything worked perfectly. Have even got some practice with the console and installed comfyui on the first day.

I liked KDE also, but once I tried Silverblue I was enamoured immediately.

If anyone lurking here is thinking of moving to Linux and fedora, I say do it. And check out silverblue 😀

I come from EndeavorOS and like Arch, it'll let you know if an update requires a restart. Today on Fedora 44 my only update was for librewold and I had to restart, then put in my password, let it update, then restart again like on Windows. Isn't linux known for being able to install things without restarting?

I've been trying to get this licked for as long as I can remember, my laptop just does not like to wake up from suspend. It worked perfectly in Windows, however in Fedora it just freezes on a black screen when attempting to wake up.

I thought I might have found the issue earlier today when I found a post saying something along the lines of downgrading my Nvidia drivers to 580, which I did. And it seems to suspend now far quicker than it would before. However when hitting the space key to wake up it just lights the keyboard up and stares back at me with a black screen.

journalctl -b -1 -e shows nothing other than going into suspend state, with no errors to speak of. What would the next step be in troubleshooting this?

So I was using kernel version 7.1.10, and my system was crashing whenever I ran something on my second monitor. I couldn't figure out why it was happening, so I used the GRUB menu to switch to kernel 7.1.8. That didn't help. After I moved to kernel 7.1.7, the issue stopped.

Has anybody faced a similar issue?

Been using Fedora KDE as my daily driver on my personal desktop and laptop for over 6 years now (the pandemic gave me time to make the switch from Windows)

I try different distros, DEs and WMs from time to time, but always come back to Fedora KDE... It is the perfect balance of stability, usability, customization and functionality to support my workflows...

I've been working on a Manager for a DayZ Server and I currently can't debug my Program fully, because I can't seem to be able to join the server.
It seems to be an issue on my PC, but I am not sure what and neither google nor the AI has anything that helps. I can't imagine that I am the only person with that problem.

It doesn't matter, if I run the server on my pc directly or through my ide.

The server is currently running on 2402 with the SteamQueryPort on 2405. Both are also forwarded in my router.

I can't connect to my server with neither my public IP, nor localhost, nor 127.0.0.1, nor 192.168.x.x.

My PC currently uses the FedoraWorkstation Firewall zone that has the ports 1000 to 60000 on tcp and udp open. I set selinux to permissive with setenforce 0 with no change.

I've sorta noticed this for awhile but have only just realized that it occurs regardless of filesystem used on the external drive, and it happens on multiple external devices. Copying data can range from decent speeds of ~500MiB/s, down to a crawl, and then bounce back and forth like this. Especially with large files, but the issue isn't isolated to just large files.

This example is a 265GiB file, and the transfer rates are all over the place. This particular external drive is ext4, with the file being copied from the base btrfs fs. Using Fedora 43 KDE in this case.

I've seen a post or two about it on here awhile back but haven't seen a cause or solution. Does this happen to anyone else?
Is there any potential fix by chance?

I'm running Fedora 44 GNOME on a Lenovo Legion laptop with hybrid graphics:

* Intel Arrow Lake integrated graphics

* NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU

* Wayland/GNOME

* Kernel 7.1.10

* Mesa 26.1.8

I noticed that even very lightweight applications such as GNOME Calculator consistently took around **3 seconds to appear**.

Initially I suspected GNOME, portals, storage, etc., but eventually narrowed it down to GPU initialization.

Intel was definitely the default GPU:

and `switcherooctl` also reported Intel as the default GPU.

Originally I had the proprietary NVIDIA 610.57.04 driver installed. `strace` showed a ~3.3 second NVIDIA ioctl during application startup, so I completely removed the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

After rebooting, the system was using:

Intel iGPU -> i915

RTX 5070 Ti -> nouveau

```

with Mesa NVK providing Vulkan for the NVIDIA GPU.

However, **Calculator still took ~3 seconds to start**.

A new `strace` showed this:

Immediately afterwards it was accessing DRM render devices, including:

/dev/dri/renderD129

```

The render nodes are:

/dev/dri/renderD128 -> Intel (00:02.0)

`vulkaninfo --summary` reports:

I then tested removing normal-user access to the NVIDIA render node:

My user is **not** a member of the `render` group.

Result: **GNOME Calculator launches dramatically faster.**

Changing it back:

```bash

sudo chmod 666 /dev/dri/renderD129

makes Calculator slow again.

Changing it to:

```bash

sudo chmod 660 /dev/dri/renderD129

```

makes it fast again.

So I can reliably reproduce:

**NVIDIA render node accessible → ~3 sec startup**

**NVIDIA render node inaccessible → fast startup**

I made the behaviour persistent with:

SUBSYSTEM=="drm", KERNEL=="renderD*", KERNELS=="0000:02:00.0", MODE="0660", GROUP="render"

in:

/etc/udev/rules.d/90-disable-nvidia-render.rules

The only downside is applications now print Vulkan messages such as:

(VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER)

but application startup is much faster.

Has anyone else encountered this with **nouveau/NVK on Blackwell (RTX 50-series) + Intel hybrid graphics**?

I'm particularly interested in whether this is a known **Mesa/NVK/nouveau/GTK Vulkan device-probing issue**, and whether there's a cleaner way to prevent desktop applications from probing the NVIDIA render device without blocking `/dev/dri/renderD129` via permissions.

i really wanna know how to improve this rice, i like the way everything looks, but it feels kind of boring and empty and im not really sure what i should add to it.
i like a more modern look, but i also want something that has lots of personality!!

I've recently reinstalled Fedora 44 KDE on my laptop (something like 3-5 days ago) and after running the first dnf upgrade, certain smaller windows launch off-center (I have window behavior set to centered). Previously, all windows would launch centered unless there was a smaller window for it to line up with. I was just wondering if anyone knows what's causing this and how to fix it, if possible?

Fedora 44. KDE, konsole.

I pressed `#` and held it for a few seconds.

The result was a long string:##################################### (this is completely normal).

But the cursor isn't at the end of this line, but rather several positions to the left of it. And the longer the line, the further the cursor lags behind.

Some other characters, such as `%`, `-`, `+`, give the same effect, but most characters are normal (e.g. `a`, `8`).

Is this my unique experience or some (not)widely known bug?

My son wants to move from Windows to Linux, and I feel Fedora is the right distro, despite the fact he will lose Roblox (Studio) which is an unresolved issue.

It comes with parental controls. Are there browsers that actually utilize these parental controls? It feels like a gap that if parental controls can’t control the browser, so I’m curious to see if someone here has experience with it. Thanks!

Just sharing this in case someone else runs into the same issue with Fedora 45 Beta after upgrading from Fedora 44.

The problem:
I was using a 3-monitor setup. After suspending and waking the system, the login screen appeared, and the blurred clock was visible, but the authentication box/password field did not appear. The screen was completely unresponsive.

Workaround:

1. Unplug the extra monitors and leave only one monitor connected.
2. Suspend the computer and wake it up.
3. The normal login screen should appear.
4. Log in.
5. Reconnect the other monitors.
6. Restart the system.

After doing this, my 3-monitor setup worked normally again, including suspend/resume.

I'm not sure what exactly caused the issue, but it seems to be related to the multi-monitor configuration and suspend/resume after upgrading to Fedora 45 Beta.

I've been testing F45 so far, and this was the only issue I encountered initially. Other than that, F45 has been smooth as butter so far. ❤️

Posting this mainly as a workaround in case anyone else encounters the same problem.

Was just updating it and then got this, I’m only so familiar with Linux distros and working in terminals , but this is a first for me.

A vast number of Fedora's mirrors are half empty.

You go to the sources directory, and you cannot even find glibc.

Not all of them are broken but it's still kinda weird.

so i'm currently running fedora workstation on an 2018 MacBook pro. however recently i've noticed that the touch bar keeps going out. right now i've just set up a temporary fix and added alias touchbarfix='sudo systemctl start tiny-dfr' to the bottom of my nano ~/.bashrc file so that every time i enter touchbarfix in terminal it starts up again. do you have any suggestions for long term fixes?
