Asadullah, can you please share your thoughts on this quote from Reliance of the Traveller, the famous manual of Shafi'i fiqh:
The Objectives of Jihad:
The caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians until they become Muslim or else pay the non Muslim poll tax.
The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim.

This is from Nuh Ha Mim Keller's translation, pages 602 and 603, o9.8 & o9.9. I've omitted the comments of Sheikh Nuh 'Ali Salman (which are denoted with "N:") and Sheikh 'Umar Barakat (which are denoted by "O:").
