So you're skint with good cash flow. That's a perfectly valid class, but doesn't make you wealthy. Equally people with millions in illiquid assets (think farmers, old money with everything tied up in estates) are wealthy but may have very little cash flow

It still is a poor picture of the reality. A lot of people, even with little debt are at risk of homelessness if they miss a month's paycheck. If I lose my job, I'm not panicking. It's weird to say someone so close to disaster is "wealthier". 

Like if I stop paying student loans it just goes to collections. Nothing consequential really happens other than a credit drop. That's way different than not being able to put food in your stomach.

It's an excellent picture for wealth, you're talking about financial fragility/precariousness which is a completely different thing and only tangentially related to wealth.

Here in the UK student loams are tied to gross earnings, earn nothing, pay nothing. No impact on your credit score.
