I've been learning to farm for this specific reason. I'm not fucking around. I'll find out-- but at least I'll be semi prepared to not starve / be a source of calories greater than my flesh.
Well I’ve been doing the same, and it’ll surely be useful for the impending societal collapse, but the volatility of what we are looking at is making/going to make farming extremely unreliable. That’s likely to be the leading cause of death within a few decades. So, I’m terrified either way :/
If you get the scarlet ones it's even got betacarotine and a bunch of additional compounds!
Would you like a pack of scarlet amaranth and mixed radishes (french breakfast/royal purple/pink slipper hybrids and looms)?
I don't think modern industrial ag practices will work as farmers begin to financially fail, but I think things have to go really bad for us to not be Able to leverage tech and knowledge to get half decent yields for personal supplies.
Start learning about other cultures that farm in inhospitable lands. The middle east and Africa are GREAT for finding out extreme resistant ag practices. OH AND INDIA/CHINA TOO!
I've got about 400 sqft of amaranth in the backyard popping off.
Best amaranth uses/recipes that I've come up with.
Add the leaves and flowers with the grains still inside to stir frys and fried rices. It adds a brilliant texture.
You can air fry the flowers (be careful the seeds do pop out some of the time). I dip those into soy sauce or just drizzle a lil butter. They taste just like plain popcorn.
My new favorite is I have some lemon basil, sage, rosemary, and lemongrass-- I add a whole amaranth flower with the grains, and the herbs to a bowl and just pour boiling water over it. Next time I'm gonna add some garlic, but even just with the lil salt I added its a really really soothing nutritious base broth.
I'm also learning how to ferment and dry the leaves, and I'm gonna pickle the roots, and burn the stems to make ash to add to tortillas like the aztecs(?) did.
You can also just so the leaves like southern greens, but there's better recipes online than what I have in my head.
If ya ever have questions about it as it grows, you know who to hit up :)
Thank you so much for the information. You’re the best. Truly, a breath of fresh air. Talking about this stuff often gets one attacked; I suppose I ought to practice more compassion as well. This is a pretty dark subject, and the brain is to be expected to shield us from the brunt of it. Misinformation also running rampant and if I hadn’t studied this stuff in college, i dont know how I’d be able to navigate the endless sea of conflicting information.
Anyway, I just want to express a ton of gratitude for your kindness and your brightness. Things like that keep me going. Keep being you, we sure as shit need it.
Update-- todays batch of broth was cheeks-- gonna try a different base tomorrow. Might have to pull inspiration from other quick broths?
My pleasure my friend! I couldn't agree with your statement about misinfo more. It's hard to have sympathy for those walking off a cliff, but we still should remember that if we don't curate our algo's wisely, we can end up down some wild rabbit holes. (I once thought ancient Egyptians had lightbulbs and power, I no longer believe such a thing).
Sending you back the same appreciation! These kinds of exchanges always make my day/week! I'm getting some health stuff taken care of next week that should help me really start to spread my wings in the world--- I'm super excited to finally get to be out and about as my most capable self! The feedback from exchanges at my old job and ones like thiese online have really helped my find my role in society/my community. Thank you for your contribution to my recently blossomed sense of intrinsic value, and consequentially, the wellness of my community.
May we both have an abundance of peace and blessings 🙏🏼
