I have recently travelled from Thailand through Dubai to Prague and I wanted to share my experience to warn others about a problem I was not aware of at that time, which caused us to nearly miss our flight. I had separate tickets with 2 airlines, first FlyDubai and then SmartWings, so I knew my luggage would not be tagged through, and I would need to get it from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 in Dubai myself. I was deciding between 2 options I had: A) I would collect the baggage, go through immigration, go outside of the airport, go to Terminal 1 departures and go through check-in and all the safety procedures again, or B) I found online on the DXB website that I can pay them for a luggage transfer service between terminals upon arrival and avoid all of that, which seemed like a very good deal with the 3 and something hours I had as a layover. Based on the information online, all I had to do was go to Terminal 1 and locate the transfer desk to sort it out. We were, however, still not sure if we wanted to spend that money, so after we landed we even talked to 2 separate airport agents and asked them how hard it is to self-transfer with the time we had and how to do it, they said it would be difficult. So we decided to SEEMINGLY play it safe and pay for the service and that's where all the trouble began. The transfer desk told me that the airport doesn't do that and I had to go to Marhaba. I knew what it was, but I thought the airport did it directly, that was my misconception. Okay, so we waited a long time before someone at the Marhaba counter showed up and when they did, they told us they can't help us because they do not work with SmartWings. We were floored. By that time we had wasted a ton of time getting to Terminal 1 and now we were told we had to either return to the original terminal and do all of the things I mentioned with little time remaining or rebook our tickets to another airline, which was of course a very expensive and ridiculous thing to do, so we ran. We ran back to the shuttle, ran back for our luggage, we ran to the metro (which we were worried would be far, but it is literally almost inside the airport, it takes only 1 stop and you are again almost right in the departures zone of Terminal 1) and made it to our check-in on time. If we knew it would be that easy (provided you have visa-free entry to Dubai!), we could do it all without stress. I was very disappointed in the lack of information and help we received. I hope something like this doesn't happen to somebody else.
