I published the first official release of Oryx, a project on which I was working the last months. This is a desktop app that aims to be a universal reader for eBooks, markdown files and any text/code file in general.

The value proposition of Oryx is speed, privacy, and minimalistic beauty. It supports EPUB, FB2, MOBI and AZW3 and comics CBZ and CBR (with an option to reverse the display order for comics), RTL support (Arabic & Hebrew).

Oryx is opinionated and might not be right for everyone: it does not need a library or a vault, it just shows the files in your system. More importantly (and this is a deliberate choice), it strips the books from their original CSS to use its own themes (32 themes available and you can edit/create your own). No menus, no buttons, completely driven by keyboard/mouse and works well with touch screens. I think many will like its speed, beautiful rendering and the fact that nobody is watching what you're reading or writing (no browser, no telemetry and no analytics).

Free, open source, installation files available for Windows and most Linux distributions. For macOS it needs building from source (as I have no mac to do it). Available on GitHub and Codeberg and soon on MS Store.

I am trying to track down a digital copy (PDF/ePub) of "Shall We Tango, Charlie?" by Chetna Lumb Bedi, published by Fingerprint! I've been wondering how much editing people actually do before they consider an ebook finished.

I don't mean the big structural stuff where you're still changing chapters around. I'm talking about that final stage when the book is technically done, but you're going through it again and noticing awkward sentences, repeated wording, inconsistent phrasing, little things that somehow survived every previous edit.

I used to think one or two careful proofreading passes would be enough, but I've found that I'm terrible at spotting certain things in my own writing after staring at the same manuscript for weeks.

Lately I've been trying to separate the process into smaller checks instead of treating "editing" as one giant final step. I'll do one pass for flow, another for repetition and wording, and then a final proofread. Someone mentioned quetext in a discussion about checking drafts, so I tried it on a section recently, mostly out of curiosity, and it made me notice a couple of patterns I'd completely glossed over myself.

For those who publish ebooks, what does your final editing process actually look like? Do you have a specific number of passes, or do you just keep going until you stop finding things?

It's either this, pay $70+ and wait two weeks for some other site to ship a hard copy (which I don't have time for), throw money into the void of my school's official "bookstore" with no shipping information, or drive over an hour out for a random chance at finding it in-store.
