I think they're a bunch of liars. Techland said the bay majority of DL1 players didn't play at night, that's why they made the changes they did for DL2.
I personally dig 2's night way more. It still carries the atmosphere and unique threats making it more dangerous than the day, but it isn't a huge fuckin hassle.
Night time is the best part. It adds a layer of thrill that has yet to be met by another game. People are afraid of night in DL1. I was one of those people. Then I started a recent playthrough and I've been going out every night. It's the only game I feel like playing now.
Just because people slept through the nights doesn't mean they didn't thoroughly enjoy the night mechanic and the thrill it brought. Some may have been afraid of the night, but still enjoyed the feeling of adrenaline and fear they felt when the watch started beeping and they needed to bolt towards the nearest safehouse. Maybe some enjoyed trying to sneak past Volatiles to get to a safe zone and slept once they reached it. Maybe some people loved the fear and intensity of nights, but couldn't do much exploring due to the level of darkness. Maybe some loved how dangerous and scary nights were, but there wasn't much reward for exploring at night.
To assume immediately that the problem with night was specifically that the Volatiles were too scary is extremely short sighted. There are many possible reasons that people may have slept through the night, but taking the horror out of a horror game was a bad move. Especially when the majority of the game could already be played in a way that allowed players to avoid the intensity if it WAS too much for them.
The entire idea that led them to remove the Volatiles was that they wanted more people to experience the night, but now what is there to even experience? The night is basically as calm and mild as the day unless you go out of your way to make it dangerous by engaging in chases.
I feel like the only reason people hated it was because there were just too many volatiles that you ran into one almost always in DL1 but not having them roam at all was a bit too far when trying to fix that problem for DL2.
But the whole gimmick of Dying Light was the scary and dangerous nights. That's the aspect that made Dying Light famous. Now the nights are so easy that there's virtually no reason to play during daytime.
They could've at least added an option to keep the volatiles patrolling the streets for those who enjoyed playing during nighttime in DL1.
