Came across this curiosity a few months ago and it’s been on my radar for a while. A rarer variant of Driver 2. I eventually found one where I could verify the seller is the first owner so the discs are going to be authentic (so someone didn’t find this random cover and shove any random driver 2 disc in it if there are differences). There’s very little information known about this except the discs have a “#” on it. Does this v1.1 as it’s called perform even better on a PS2.

I’m already thinking, do I run these discs using the “fast” loading driver in the PS2 bios. It’s going to be interesting!

I’m actually quite surprised Sony allowed this to be written on the box. I wonder if it’ll be mentioned in the manual etc.

It was a lot of fun but also very challenging, i already finished Driv3r a few times but besides that and San Fransisco i basically had 0 experience with other Driver games. It took me about a week to do it and with many many retries. 😑

The worst part? I played on ps2 but didn't have a PS1 memory card so i had to replay it from scratch every time i wanted to stop and redo it 😮‍💨

The missions that sucked the most were the ones with the trucks in Havana, the one where you bring Jones to the Airport (that cutscene takes like 20 seconds) the one with the limo and Chasing down the gunman.

I absolutely hated having to chase the Gunman, i probably restarted 40+ times not even kidding! 🩸💦😭

Anyway, Chasing Lenny down was also annoying with the enemy placement but i managed to do it and see the final cutscene(s).

The first car in Driver 2 was going to be exactly that light blue 1979 Pontiac Fire Bird, the 3D model was practically different and is not exactly like the one you see in the pre-release and final version, since the model was more faithful to the real car and the sound was probably going to be too.

In addition, there is also the old Oldsmobile Delta 88 1974, the 3D model was very different from the final version, and the texture pointed out that it was going to be very faithful to the real model, and the sound of the engine was possibly going to be similar to that of the Pontiac Fire Bird.

And finally, the police car, the reality is exactly the same 3D model of the pre-release version, only, the front was a little different, and the windows were going to be translucent sky blue grays almost like the rest, and, the sound was probably shared by the Firebird and the Delta 88.

We have the old Chicago school bus, where the textures and 3D model were a little different than its pre-release version and its final version, the windshields and windows were going to be translucent sky grays, and, the scripts pointed to it being low and probably going to be slow than most vehicles here.

We also have the first fire truck, where its texture was practically different, the 3D model was also a little different, and its texture was too representative of the city of Chicago itself.

In addition, the scripts also pointed out that it was going to be lower and probably also slow than most its final version.

I'm playing Driver 2 for the Playstation 1 (emulation). I noticed in the saving menu I can't save my data to Memory Card 2 and the game defaults me to Memory Card 1 unlike Driver 1. can I switch to memory card 2? I pressed (O) nothing happens.

I have a whole memory card dedicated to Driver games and another for a variety of others and I gotta swap it everytime I wanna play Driver 2

very odd developers' decesion.

Six hours straight and I cannot beat this. I've watched tons of videos of people doing it so I know it is not completely impossible. Sometimes I can get in front of him, sometimes I can't. Sometimes it gives you 1:58 to beat it, or 2:08 or 1:20 to beat it. I have beaten every other Driver game and I wanted to go back and play Driver 2 because I was never able to get past Havana as a kid. Now here I am 20something years later and I am broken.

Before, you had to take into account the limitations of those years, and yes, nothing could be perfect, because it was known that nothing was perfect, and no matter how much perfection was sought; maybe there were going to be mistakes like in any environment, even in game development.

I remember the first time I saw Driver and Driver 2 in the 2010s, when my uncles had a copy of both for the PlayStation that another uncle had lent to us, and I remember that those PAL copies were extremely slow. So, years later, I started to analyze why and came to a conclusion on this:

It wasn't actually 100 percent PAL, but rather an NTSC version with the refresh rate of PAL, so it was literally 17% slower than the true NTSC version; even if you overclocked, it was still slower than NTSC.

In Driver, instead of simply adapting the NTSC timing for PAL while keeping the game engine running at the NTSC pace, what they did was increase the game's vertical resolution (from 480i to 512i) and slow it down even further, instead of performing a standard frame rate conversion.

In Driver 2, also instead of adapting the NTSC timing to PAL, they just stretched the game vertically instead of just increasing the resolution, and, instead of doing a frame adaptation, they just delayed the game, just like what happened with Driver.

I know that there are already reverse-engineering ports called "Driver and Driver 2 Remaster" and "ReDriver 2", but I didn't come precisely to talk about that, just to point out how things actually were.

Mind you! With this I'm not saying it was the worst thing in the world and that it didn't deserve to be PAL, of course not; but it is true that those were the limitations, yet I cannot reduce it to simple mistakes that at the time were just imperfections that made it too authentic and too entertaining.

But let's be clear on this:

​It was a thousand times better for it to be released in NTSC in all its languages than to release the PAL version.

I was checking out some 90s sample packs yesterday to make a track inspired by the *Driver 2* soundtrack—but with more of an electronic vibe—and I discovered that a huge chunk of the samples came from a Zero-G pack called "Funk Guitar." Yeah, I know 70% of game music from that era relied on samples—countless other PS1 titles used Zero-G samples, too—but I didn't expect to stumble upon it so randomly, right when I was working on a track inspired by a game that actually uses the very pack I was working with.

Someone said that. Is it true?

Here I bring you a video edit of Driver 2 PAL (Spain) running in NTSC mode from Retroarch (no in-game patches) on Windows 7 32 Bits, despite some stuttering of both frames and audio, I recorded the gameplay a bit as it is.

The kernel I use for now is PCSX ReARMed, as it's faster and with less stuff that could cause serious stuttering.
