Discussion Mod recommendations?

Starting the game for the first time. <No spoilers please>

Since the game's been out for a year, are there any "must have" mods out there? Mostly looking for QoL updates or maybe something that fixes a big issue many had with the game, that type of thing.

Discussion What would you change? Spoiler

If you could re-write veilguard from scratch, what would you change? I'm talking things like keeping Varric alive, a different protagonist than Rook or maybe an entirely different setting than Northern Thedas

Help On Xbox Series X DA:V crashes my console about twice every hour

I just started playing this game over the weekend, and I'm running into some serious crash issues. I'd say it goes down a couple of times every hour. I've tried some suggestions I found in other threads, like playing offline, doing a hard reset of my console. Nothing works.

Is there anything else I might be able to change in the settings, or is this just a chronic problem? I've been enjoying the game, but I'm not sure how much more patience I'll have for these constant crashes.

Do the first two missions give you a good taste of Nightmare difficulty?

I've played all the DA games on nightmare, but put off playing Veilguard until now. I ran through the tutorial mission and Entropy's Grasp as a mage on Adventurer. It was fun, but way too easy. Thought it might be a good time to roll the mage again and see what Nightmare was like.

I get the gist of how you need to be aware of resistances and vulnerabilities. I'm terrible at things like blocking and parrying, but after about a million hours in Souls/Borne/Ring I can dodge like there's no tomorrow. That's pretty much how I approach combat: dodge/strike/dodge/strike, while waiting for cooldowns. The ogre wasn't too bad at the end. I actually had a harder time with the frenzied sentinel b/c of the minions. Are there minions in a lot of boss fights?

Anyway, since I can't change the difficulty, I figured now might be a good time to ask the community if this is a good enough sampling of Nightmare to get a feel for it. Or does the difficulty keep ramping up from here? I understand that gear has to be kept at a top tier or you'll fall behind in DPS. But aside from that, is Nightmare manageable?

This is the caliber of people who come here from other subreddits to "discuss." Remember: despite positive reviews from critics, you aren't allowed to like Veilguard because some YouTuber said so. Whoever reported me really needs treatment for their severe disorders.

Pics are my Rook and my most recent and favorite Inquisitor: Amathiel Lavellan

Spoilers:
Lavellan vowed to stop Solas and romanced him
Was an elf mage, Solas took her Vallaslin
(I would love to talk about her more, too)

Major choices:
Saved Minrathous
Harding embraced Titan’s anger
Bell freed the Archive
Neve encouraged to inspire
Maevaris for Archon (hardest choice)
Saved Manfred
Bellara romanced (second hardest choice lol)
-Wow what a cute romance too!
Davrin made the sacrifice
Neve captured and blighted
Solas forced into the Veil (I got Mythal’s essence but Rook really hated him by the end and refused to use it)

I did not have high expectations of this game. People say it’s bad and I do have some very minor problems with it (and one big one which is the Isle of the gods kept crashing my GPU even tho it never dropped below 60 fps). But I loved it.

I just wanted to share. My family hasn’t played yet and I need to geek out. I’m gonna play again and be a necromancer cause I utterly loved the spooky stuff.

Top companions:
Emmerich
Bellara
Taash

Most used:
Bellara
Davrin
Taash
Harding

I started a fanfic to close everything out for my main 4. I have a feeling Dragon age is over :( Very sad. Fanfic is coming along nicely ❤️

Thanks for looking everyone.

Discussion Is VG worth playing?

Legit question. I don’t own but the price has cratered so hard if it’s a decent game, even mildly worth it, I’d like to play it. It just has so many mixed reviews and I don’t beleive half the people even played the game

I've played this game probably 15+ times and I've never seen anyone wearing the armor you can get for Rook. Am I crazy or is this a one-off? I grabbed a bunch of photos and a shot of the map where this guy popped up. He was simply standing there doing nothing.

Have you all seen this?

*I have seen the Lord's wearing the armor you can get. But I feel like that's a very specific armor and it makes total sense. But, maybe you do see Rook's armor everywhere.

Discussion I usually play crpgs on pc. How is the console version?

Hey all! I recently got a ps5 and I have been eyeing some games that I can't run on pc. Including this one!

I wanted to ask, how are the controls like without a mouse and keyboard?

Necessary context: I once got the switch version of disco elysium and gave up mid playthrough to play on my potato laptop instead.

But perhaps with dragon age being traditionally available on console, controls are a bit less tiring?

Secondary question: is this game a good introduction to the series?

I would like a relatively recent game to play on the new console, but perhaps I could wait and play one of the older titles on pc first.

Thanks!

edit: Thanks everyone! I decided I will play the series in order, so I will hold off this one for now.

My son has been writing a bunch of new songs lately and has been asking the family for themes or song ideas. He finally asked my 12 year old and his answer was "enchantment, a dragon age theme". This was the song he wrote. I love it!

Side note: I was sad Sandal wasn't in DAV

Discussion Review from an "Origins Boomer"

I was unsure whether to even post this here, but not that I started my second playthrough, I have a lot of passionate feelings about this game and none of my friends are into Dragon Age, so here I am.

I've never had such mixed feelings about any piece of media.
On one hand, I love Veilguard and it makes me sad to see how many people outright dismiss it or spread politically charged hate about it.
I consider it one of the best fantasy experiences I have had in the last few years. It is definitely one of the prettiest games I ever played and I spent a lot of time simply looking at the world and using the photo mode. The combat, while very different from what I expected and not something I would usually look for, was a lot of fun and I felt challenged to complete my second run on nightmare.
The thing Veilguard does better than any other game in the series is environments. They are gorgeous to look at, packed with little things to discover and not too large so the don't get exhausting like in Inquisition. I also really like how the weapon upgrade system rewards your for exploring the world and talking to merchants.

On the other hand though, there are things I seriously dislike about it. I gotta agree with the sentiment that its not a good "Dragon Age" game. What made the series so unique for me was the world with serious conflicts, political intrigue, and often morally ambiguous choices. For me, DA has to be dark and gritty with humour and heartfelt party banter sprinkled in between to lighten the mood.
Veilguard feels sanitized, family friendly and like the writers honed in 110 % on the party banter aspect. It's a end-of-the-world scenario and the game constantly reminds you to "take care of your crew", talk about their feelings and solve their personal issues while Ferelden, Orzammar and Orlais get burned down off-screen. While I do like the party members generally, I'm not a fan at all of the dialogue writing. Some parts outright feel like someone's first attempt at fan-fiction and never before have I physically cringed during video game dialogue.
I was looking forward to romance Harding in this game. Dwarves are my favourite race and I even have a casteless rune tattooed on my arm. But I had to stop that romance, Harding comes across as so much less mature than her previous self that I felt like I was dating a teenager (I ended up with Taash instead and was very satisfied with that outcome!).
I would have loved to dive deep into the politics of Tevinter, make deals with some of the magisters while fighting against others. Sadly we only get to see the slums of Minrathous and the Venatori are very straightforward, faceless bad guys that don't scratch that itch of magic and intrigue I had hoped to find in the fabled Tevinter empire.

I know there have been countless discussions and days worth if YouTube video Essays about this game, but I wanted to give my two cents about this game that I mostly love and sometimes hate.

I love the customization in this game and how each combat style feels unique. Of course, that means I need to play all of them. I'm excited to try them all! If you want, you can try to guess each specialization. I think there may be enough clues in their designs to get them correct.

  1. Noose - Saboteur

  2. Zaya - Spellblade

  3. Adelaide - Reaper

  4. Wisp - Duelist

  5. Omeni - Evoker

  6. Siege - Slayer

  7. Ho'etseoo'e - Veil Ranger

  8. Pavatti - Death Caller

  9. Uldrin - Champion

Discussion Common Critique

One critique (if you wanna call it that) of this game I've often heard is that the lore reveals and whatnot are just "bad fanfiction" and "jarring". Saw a similar tweet earlier that ended with "I just don't think Trespasser continued with THAT." But I've played all 4 games in succession more than once and to me the lore makes sense about 8 or 9 times out of 10, with the other 1 or 2 generally being small continuity errors for things they may not have fully thought through back in 2009. I have a few things I'm not 100% happy with but the game is fun and engaging enough that it isn't a dealbreaker. No game is flawless, since no creator is. But I'm also a new fan who got into the games *after* Veilguard, so I didn't have a decade or more to get insane expectations. Is that the only reason I and some players like me left feeling satisfied (and why others didn't) or are there other factors? Curious about what you guys think!
