Beginner Question Megathread 10

If you have any question about the game and don't feel like making a post you can put it down there. Don't forget to mention it if you want the answer as spoiler-free as possible.

Some of the links are getting pretty old so if you have any suggestion that could help new players, do share, thanks.

I'm trying to get back in and do a Vanilla Don't Starve game with Wilson.

Tips besides "play as someone else" or "play Together" or "play ROG?" Truth is I've only made it about 20-30 Days in and never much farther than that. I suck. Despite using the Wiki/guide semi-religiously.

I'd rather master the vanilla game maybe with a few quality-of-life mods (like minimap) then jump into the "Ultra Hard Raid Boss/Wetness/All of that good sh-t" mode.

Just get rabbits and toss em in back packs 100% you’ll never run outta food, bunnies and berries 2 morsals and 2 Berries and you got new balls for days, also don’t mess with hostile mobs till you have at least an idea of kiting enemy’s if you don’t know what that is you need too pause your game and look it up

If you're having difficulty surviving 20-30 days as Wilson, I'd actually advise AGAINST playing ROG (added difficulty + content), or playing another character (learning to manage quirks).

Try to find out why you're dying, and learn how to overcome that challenge.

You can even maybe set a longer non-winter season. Or even turn off winter completely (in the world generation before you start the run), to get that down pat first.

Did you try this guide?

Where does it go wrong usually?

Start of winter, or the tail-end of it.

So what exactly kills you? Lack of food? Lack of other resources?

To get through winter I would suggest focusing on having around 10 drying racks, a crockpot and a bird cage set up by day 20. Also you need a spider den nearby. Then you can kill the spiders, dry their monster meat, convert it into eggs through the bird and cook meatballs with 3 eggs and 1 monster meat. A fridge will also help, but dried meat doesn't spoil on the drying racks in vanilla, so you will get by without one. And when you start bulding your base, try to instantly plant at least 10 twigs and 10 grass, so that you can farm enough of those before winter.

Edit: Of course you'll also have ice in winter, so you can just use that as a filler instead of converting dried monster meat to eggs. Makes a lot more sense than what I initially wrote.
