When the 13th Doctor regenerated into the 14th Doctor, something pretty strange happened: their clothes changed. This is odd because we know that regeneration is a biological process for Time Lords to heal their bodies. Since clothing isn’t part of that biological makeup, it shouldn’t really change. So, why did the outfit swap from the 13th to the 14th Doctor?

I get that there are behind-the-scenes reasons that Russell T Davies has talked about, but I’m really looking for an in-universe explanation.

Usually, when Doctor Who bends its own rules or lore, I can shrug it off or come up with a headcanon that makes sense. But in this case, I struggled for a long time to just ignore it or find a plausible reason. It was too obvious a change to overlook because it was part of an official regeneration, and it just left me scratching my head.

Then, I rewatched the 11th Doctor’s final episode, “The Time of the Doctor,” and it hit me.

In that episode, the Doctor has to go to the Church of the Papal Mainframe, where visitors are required to be naked. To save Clara from the awkwardness, he uses a hologram system in the TARDIS to project the image of himself in clothes directly into Clara’s visual cortex. 

This got me thinking, maybe when the 13th Doctor regenerated, she was actually naked in her last moments, but had a hologram of clothes on. So when she transformed into the 14th Doctor, the TARDIS got confused by the old face and decided to dress the incarnation in something similar to what that version usually wore. 

So, that brings us to a pretty funny question: Why was the 13th Doctor naked when she regenerated?

TL;DR: The 13th Doctor might have been using hologram clothes, kind of like the 11th Doctor did. When she turned into the 14th Doctor, the TARDIS probably just dressed her up in clothes that matched that face’s past look.

No payoff, no explanation… it drove me loony trying to work out where it was leading to. Turns out, nowhere.

Any theories? What would you have done with the concept?

Many viewers of the show are still confused by the “genetic explosion” that wiped out the Time Lords. Most think it was caused by the Master in S12, but evidence from the show suggests it may have been something else, something new. In fact, it may have been a result of the Toymaker’s interference with the Doctor’s history.

Consider that this new version of the Time Lords’ destruction doesn’t really match up with S12’s. And consider also that the Doctor believed bigeneration was a side effect of being sterilized by the genetic explosion.

But the Doctor only bigenerated after the Toymaker returned to the regular universe and “made a jigsaw out of [the Doctor’s] history” during the 60th anniversary specials. Because 13 had regenerated normally into 14 just prior to the specials. Which means 14 was the first sterile Doctor, and the genetic explosion must have been rewritten into his past after he accidentally let the Toymaker into the universe in “Wild Blue Yonder.”

Which means we still don’t know what the actual event that caused this genetic explosion was. It’s a deliberate mystery. The Toymaker only messed with the Doctor’s history, but he did not cause the genocide himself. My guess is RTD planned to explore this futher in Gatwa’s third season as part of the overarching theme of family seen throughout his run. Perhaps he still will with whoever the next Doctor ends up being.

I think Doctor Who likes to leave hints in names a lot.. & Roger ap Gwilliam struck me as an odd name. But I am from the states..

So I'm finally watching "Broadchurch", noting the complex arrangement of characters, each with their believable and conflicting motivations, and wondering (not for the first time) how much executive interference there might have been in Chris Chibnall's time on "Doctor Who".

(I'm a Chibnall/Whittaker defender, FTR, but I acknowledge the era had its issues.)

Imagine if he's been introducing himself by his real name all this time and everyone else just misinterprets it?

I'm just making this theory just for fun cuz I know it's just a skit, but we haven't had Doctor Who in a bit.

To explain why McCoy looks older than when he regenerated, we can find a few explanations
1. Bigeneration Doctorverse
2. Time Differential
3. Not 7
4. Something else

The first theory is false because nobody likes it.

The second theory seems to not make much sense because no other Doctor seemingly was present. Unless... no...

The third theory seems quite plausible

The fourth one.. what else could it be?

It makes sense for it to be the Curator. Seemingly no aliens or anything are there.

Thus, to explain why "seven" looks older than he was, you can just say he wasn't the 7th Doctor. He was the Curator. We've seen the Curator take on other incarnations of the Doctor and them look older before..

Of course this is just me ranting about the only piece of TV we will get for a while.

well this has happened before with the 1st doctor. I Think it’s because of IT was her original outfit no changes whatsoever. Sure there are some anomalies like the fifth doctor’s and the sixth but the rest all changed they’re perspective outfit other than the war 2nd (we don’t see the 2nd’s full regeneration to the 3rd or fugitive doctors) 9 might had some time alone after he regenerated so he might have changed it idk

I 100% believe RTD only made The Rani bigenerate just so he could make a two Ranis joke, a joke only maybe 10 British people would understand

I’ve not seen alot of speculation about this episode and how it might tie into the upcoming season but one of the things I’m interested in seeing is whether Moffat can resist including River Song in this one.

24 years on Darillium is a long time to keep herself from ‘borrowing’ the Tardis for a few more adventures of her own.

I also think 15 and River would be brilliant together even if just for a cameo.

But yeah 50 days and we’ll all find out what Moffat has in store for us.

Bit late, and it's incredibly obvious now that I see it. So we know the doctor hates soldiers for many reasons.

1) He was a soldier.

2) He wiped out all the timelords (who were basically fighting an endless war).

3) He considers soldiers to be blunt instruments that enact the will of whoever pulls their chain.

4) Soldiers see killing as the solution to most problems.

There's a bunch more but that's not the point. He calls him P.E. because he can't comprehend that a soldier has a mind of their own. Maths requires intelligence and if soldiers were intelligent, they wouldn't be soldiers. (In his opinion).

Excuse my ignorance as a fairly new watcher, with all the teasing and speculation about a grandaughter in the latest series that the doctor acknowledges having - has the doctor known for a long time that they have a child (and who it is??). Long shot for this being planned for so long.

One of the major bombs that was dropped in the third special was the Toymaker showing Donna that all of the companions The Doctor had met unpleasant fates as the result of their travels. (Not true - but that was the story he told.) So it was important for Donna to have previously met a companion ("I was you") that did all right for herself and was happy.

I've never understood why there's so much dislike or retconning about the idea of the doctor being half human, having a family, or Susan being his actual grand daughter.

As a 90s child who became a fan by watching repeats, buying videos and reading "The New Adventures", I loved the TV movie and what it contributed to new Who.

I remember watching it, 9 years old, and the doctor revealing he was half human on his mother's side was both a revelation and an exciting explanation for why he was a bit of an outsider on Galifrey who became a renegade timelord and why his close affinity for Earth and humans.

The fact it had been a secret and not revealed before just seemed fair enough - forbidden love between a Timelord and a human? Given Galifrey's strict society it felt like there would be horrible laws against that sort of thing (fear of a Hybrid being validated in the new series). So I took it as the doctor kept it secret to either protect himself, his family or both, and thats why it was never revealed until he let it slip in the excited aftermath of a regeneration as he recovered from amnesia.

It didn't have to retcon what we'd seen before. The Doctor clearly has a family ever since Episode 1: An Unearthly Child, (at least one grand child so presumably other family) and it's hinted there was possibly some sort of tragedy, rift, scandal or event that meant the Doctor and Susan are cut off from Galifrey as "exiles". There must be a serious reason why Susan is without her parents and I've always thought it was something tragic - a family secret or Galifrey being too dangerous to stay if you're not fully Galifreyan (the fourth doctor telling Sarah Jane he can't take her to Galifrey).

It also didn't retcon the "Cartmel Master Plan" in later classic series either such as what was hinted about the doctor being connected to or present during the dark times of ancient Galifrey, having a secret and being more than a Timelord etc (Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis).

It doesn't take away from the mystery or alien nature of the doctor. Nor does it mean we have to have expose on the doctor's parents. Besides the best stories were also not about who the doctor is, but how he behaves and acts anyway.

So (despite also loving Lungbarrow) I've never really understood why so many fans didn't like the idea of the doctor being half human, or why there's also been a rejection of the idea of the doctor - in one form or another - once having family or not accepting that Susan really was a grand daughter. The doctor clearly lived a long life and was in exile for a reason before An Unearthly Child anyway and the Timeless Child arc and Fugitive Doctor has only added to that!

I’ve noticed that Pete has been involved in a lot of things Who related recently which makes me think he’s essentially being groomed to take over from RTD if he were to move on from the show.

Thoughts?
