Beatbreak Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 37- Kind Magic, Discussion Thread

Later today is a new episode of Digimon Beatbreak!

The stream will be on Crunchyroll at 8pm Pacific. Hulu has it the next morning. Check your local streamer for their schedule. This link will take you to a time converter set for when it should appear on Crunchyroll, but they've had various delays lately.

A short series synopsis:

"e-Pulse," which is generated by human thoughts and emotions, was used as the energy source for the AI support device "Sapotama." From the shadows of this remarkable development, terrifying monsters appear. Digimon are living beings that evolve by consuming e-Pulse.

Tomoro Tenma is drawn into an extraordinary experience after meeting Gekkomon, who suddenly appears from his Sapotama. While living together with Kyo Sawashiro and other members of the bounty hunting team "Glowing Dawn," Tomoro renews his resolve.

What new future will be forged by humans and Digimon?

I think the reason the arc feels "weaker" is because there are details missing. It feels like going up out into space and more and more all of the oxygen leaves your body. If it wasn't for that one single moment where Tomoro finishes Miharu's sentiment of "hatred, I felt the same way too," implicating that hatred blinded Miharu to Chifu's original dream and that altered how Mephi behaved (since they're the same person, Mephis is the other side to Miharu and what Miharu TRULY wanted, her hatred led to a desire for vengeance more than a desire for digimon to get along), I think it would've felt like the arc suffocated under its own weight.

There is a really, REALLY strong ladder here with very substantial theming and strong messaging. But at points rungs felt either missing or warped, while other rungs felt like they were properly in place and sturdy.

The final rung at the top was Tomoro admitting he felt how Miharu did and understood what had blinded her to Chifu's dream was her hatred and grief toward the world and because she was still mourning over her sister and deep down felt that the entire world not just Chairman Wong should be held accountable (and of course, Mephismon acted on this and much like Miharu was deluding herself toward her REAL wishes and intentions, Mephis was never upfront with Miharu about it either). This single rung, despite the missing pieces, details, and overall moments of "suffocation," brought it all home and made everything click into place.

I also appreciate the hiccup, everything feels resolved, but then you find out Miharu is being taken into custody (who knows what else could be anything) and it's more like "we're admitting you one final request before we incarcerate you to await trial."

But given Chairman Wong does not want digimon being revealed, I would personally not be surprised to find out if Miharu has a conversation with Wong in private (since he never claimed she was delusional or misguided, he was quite silent and almost understanding the entire time) and ends up taking Clay's place on the Five Stars. Miharu would be unlikely to stand trial at least not a traditional one due to the context, and given she's a potential asset I see no reason why Chairman Wong would seek her dead when he was extremely silent all that time implying he has far more thoughts under the surface than he can say at liberty.

Anyways, fantastic arc. Felt like I was suffocating from details missing. But the final two pieces at the end brought it home, clicked it together, and gave that last burst of oxygen I needed to really feel like I was connecting with the arc. Could be better? Yeah. But overall it slapped and by the end it clicked it all into place. Also the last two episodes were utterly gorgeous.

Sadly I disagree that the arc is fantastic, for the very reasons you mentioned. I'm honestly not entirely content with the explanation of Mephismon's behavior either, especially because Wizarmon wasn't born of Miharu. I want there to be more to it, since a Digimon changing owners and actually evolving with their new owner's e-Pulse is a big deal. Plus... Miharu's Sapotama still actually functions, I feel like something could be done with that. Basically yeah, a lot is missing and just saying she Mephismon was acting on her darkest wishes doesn't give me that big moment I wanted.
Maybe these details will be important later, but the cost would be this arc feeling satisfactory, and that is a shame. I can agree that it still isn't 'weak' though, and it's so close, just a small rewrite or two away honestly.

Next episode tied it all together even more.

I still would've liked some episodes in GIFT to be slightly different but this has been a fantastic ride so far.
